Been offered one for £3k. 11 months MOT and has done 160k miles. 09 Plate
Madness to consider it?
Was thinking I could use as a tow car for the race cars and some smoking about local driving till ULEZ expansion kills the diesel option for me.

As long as it is a good one then i'd go with it. Check suspension etc for knocks (lower arms take a hammering) on top of the usual.
Just took in a Disco 3 with 300k on the clock and that had no major failures up to then and underneath its fundamentally the same car.
Worst case if something major goes wrong its got to be worth £1500 in bits.

I just got rid of one and it was tragic. Drank fuel at a rate of knots if you dared to drive it in anything but in hyper-miler mode, every part came with a ludicrous premium and the driving just wasn't worth it. They're alright as cars and mine was very multi-purpose but too expensive for what it was. I work with garages repairing all sorts of cars and these come up all the time. Major failure points are alternator, air suspension and EGR valves. Mine had gearbox trouble (Make sure it's been serviced, it's NOT lifetime oil as the documentation says!), lower suspension arms, a drive shaft, prop centre bearing, needed new wheels as the 22" hideous monstrosities that came on it cracked while driving on a perfectly level piece of road, and endless other niggles. Be wary of cracking oil pumps too on some ~2006 models I think. The engine was the only bit of mine that didn't let me down. If you're considering it, check absolutely everything you can. Literally every component possible as it will cost you. I sank approximately 3k in garage fees before I sold mine and it had only done 130k miles.
