Died on this day in 2010, and hardly anyone knows who he is, yet there are probably thousands of people who owe their lives to his invention...

Whilst there is no data to support the OP's contention that I can find, I reckon he is spot on. He is almost unknown. Which is a shame because his invention has been instrumental in saving the lives of probably thousands of people.

It's not only post crash that the data comes in useful. If there's a 'glitch' the black box recordings can be used to identify the cause. BA increased the number of sensors on their fleet and were able to identify a problem and put it to the plan manufacturers. BA increased their checks on the specific item and the aircraft manufacturer changed the dodgy bit.

It seems a strange tactic to move this thread off the main News one. While his recorder was specific to aircraft, the implications are widespread. He won't even become well known at this rate.

A lot of stuff seems to get moved almost at random recently
