Leon FR - TSi or TDi?

I'm about to purchase one of two cars. I drive 12k miles/year. Do I choose the TDi or the TSi? They both cost the same, £9.5k, and both have the same spec (Technology).

I'd say TSI at that mileage. Engine more refined, petrol is cheaper, no DPF regens. Pretty sure the engine is chain rather than belt too, so no belt change due. A colleague has one with the 1.8 TSI and had no issues over the past 2-3 years he's had it.

I would have the TSi, more satisfying to drive, better bet for future values.

Where do you do your majority of your mileage?

If it's mainly motorway & A roads then I'd be going for the tdi, the reason I say this because the tdi is suited to those kind of journeys the extra torque also makes for a more relaxed journey also with there only being a 2p difference between petrol & diesel it makes sense.

If it's lots of short stop start journeys then go petrol as you won't be giving the DPF in the diesel time to regen, so work out your journey & buy the car to fit.

i have the 180 tsi and its a nice engine but watch out for the waterpumps, common and expensive to do.

Dirty to refill - diesel pumps always filthy handles (though the super diesel is clean). So always using plastic one time use gloves.

The emissions / air pollution

The fact I like to do diesel then petrol then diesel etc to balance out the more silly petrols I have had with more sensible petrols.

The fact I’d wager the next car + 1 is likely to be electric (we run cars for lots of years and I can easily see the massive development of EVs and the no doubt taxed off the road ICE or crippling depreciation on ICE due to the desire for a EVs by the masses

Noise.

12 k miles a year is not many miles each way every day. My diesel in winter takes 12 miles to get up to temp. Before being up to temp the economy is poor very poor, but if I then carry on to do 200miles Sue it makes no odds but my commute is 75mile round trip so winter hurts.
