1 series. Shadow Edition. Which model to get?
Discussion
Hi everyone. For the past year I wanted to get a bmw but I didn't in the end but now I want a 1 series. I'm looking at the shadow editions and I love it so far but not sure what model to get. 118,120 or 125. I'm towards getting the 118i because it's cheaper. The looks is the same right? The 120 and the 125 is only faster and nothing else? Are the 2017 models the newest face-lift versions?
Also what shadow edition colours do they have available? I like the black but not sure if it's black or grey? 🤔
Is the shadow edition even worth getting vs the normal 1 series? I'm planning to get somthing 2017+
What kind of tech specs should I be looking out for when I buy and the other general stuff?
Appreciate everyone's help 🙏😁

I’d get the 120 or 125 over the 118 purely because it is the 2 litre engine and not the 1.5 - the latter is reckoned by friends in the trade to be somewhat unreliable.
Of course the PH answer is an M140i, but if you just want a nice car to drive about in and aren’t bothered about pace, then the 2 litre is plenty for you.

How much of a price difference is it do you know? I'm sure the 125 is the most expensive out of those 3. What is the difference between 118 and 120? The engine is that it? What about appearance? Is it the same?
You again

Unless you’ve changed in 2 years , looks , price , performance in that order are your priorities.
So I’d wager a 120i shadow edition as the shadows come with nice extras (118 is rubbish performer, 125 too fast ) is probably the best.

I hope you are well 😊
My budget is under 20k. The lower the better. 2017. 5dr. Petrol and auto would be nice too. Colour I like the grey and white. Black is nice too. Can I do it with 20k? Pref lower. Like 18k?
( I wanted to contact you before I made this thread but I couldn't find the god dam thread lol)

Certainly with £20k even using BMW Approved Used website; they could be cheaper elsewhere.

120i petrol 5 door auto Shadow Editions start listing (AUC) at just under £20k. I've never bought a volume sales car BMW second hand, but can't imagine given the number available you would not be able to negotiate a discount to drop it close to your preferred spend.
But the 1 series you're looking at has ceased production, with the new one out (or available to order) ; maybe the big BMW dealerships have any pre-registered cars of the old style in stock at a good price.
I don't know but it might be worth a visit / phone-call.

I’ve heard tales of the 1.5 being less durable, can’t remember what the specific fault was off the top of my head unfortunately.
Bit late to this party but I've had a 118i for nearly 12 months now and is been faultless apart from some water ingress in the rear lights which BMW sorted under warranty.
I know the B38 3 cylinder 1.5 engine has been around in numerous Minis and BMWs and I've never heard any horror stories. I'd take the economy figures with a pinch of salt though, mine averages 33mpg!
Shadow Edition is a nice trim level, big brakes, no chrome, HK audio etc. Mines Mineral Grey and looks lovely when it's clean. It's not too slow for what it is, I should have gone for an M140 looking at the economy of this one
it's nice enough to drive though.

My other half’s F56 MINI with that engine was a long way off the claimed economy; over three years it averaged 40.3mpg.I know the B38 3 cylinder 1.5 engine has been around in numerous Minis and BMWs and I've never heard any horror stories. I'd go for a 120i. The later ones have the B48 2.0 4 cylinder engine and they're very good, about 180 bhp - they are not shy. I'd have the 8 speed automatic as well.
There should be plenty about as new unregistered or late low milers - you'll find that showroom new cars can be had for a big chunk off list as the dealer has paid for it and wants it gone. Despite the questionable styling, the later F20 1 Series is a very good car.

I rate the 118i unit, it's a sweet engine and good fun to drive. Works fine with the standard Manual 'box, whereas the diesels and bigger units are at their best with the ZF8 Auto.
I guess it all comes down to how much you care about performance and how much you want to spend. But if you're not opting for the M140i I think I'd just go for the newest and highest spec 1-series you can find in budget, even if that means going for a 118i
