Hi Guys,
I have recently fallen in love with the idea of finding an old 911 and having it restored.

The Singer Williams car is an absolute inspiration and whilst I can’t afford one of those anytime soon, I am sure there are some really solid options out there.

I am looking for bang for buck while still being able to make some customisations to the car. For example I would love:
- wife body with flared wheel arches to make the car look very aggressive
- a beautiful leather and cf interior
- Deep dish fuch style wheels
- gearbox like in the Singer Williams
- an NA high hp engine.

I am sure there are forums dedicated to this sort of thing and any guidance of where to start researching along with pointing me in the right direction of companies that do this sort for hint without charging the world would be amazing.

Also any rough idea on what this sort of project costs?

Thank you

I'm doing a Backdate 911 next Spring. My number one choice would be a Singer, unfortunately buying one would bankrupt me..! I've already spoken to Rick at 991Retro in Yorkshire and was very impressed with his knowledge and attitude..I'm probably going for a narrow body pre-impact bumper in Slate grey for the Steve McQueen 'Le Mans' look..
I'll use a 964 base as i prefer the G50 box and take it from there...Without going overboard and keeping things relatively affordable i was given a rough estimate of £70K..
I'm also going to give Richard Tuthill a phone as i really like what they do especially their EXE-TC suspension to make it very suitable for fast road driving..

These were £250k

There is the odd well put together 993 for a 1/4 of the price.

And a year after the limited edition of 10 cars was launched they weren’t sold out. I happened across the launch even for that car as it was held up the road from where I worked...had no idea what it was but couldn’t believe it when the press stories came out with a £250k price tag...

£70k ! Good luck :-) I can help you paint it with rattle cans to keep to budget....

Have you looked at the 72 e to RS spec at RUF ?
No idea if it’s any good but looks nice at £99k.

Ask foot solider the build cost on the one he just picked up. Sit down 1st. Must have been £300k
Or just buy a 964 RS lightweight.

Yep, that's why I would rather save a huge amount of change and get something like this (now Sold)

PORSCHE 993 CARRERA 3.8
£65,995
Registration: 1996/P
Colour: Basalt Black
History: Full Service History

The engine had a full rebuild from a 3.6 to a 3.8 including GT3 crankshaft, Custom Arrow rods, Mahle 3.8 barrell & piston set up, mechanical rocker arm and shaft tappet modification, Super Cup custom camshafts, Varioram stripped clean and rebuilt plus all gaskets, seals and bearings. The car was then set up by Chipwizzards to achieve 330bhp.

Following these works the gearbox was also rebuilt with the inclusion of a LSD and any other parts required. The car runs on Bilstein coilovers with a 993 RS geometry ride height and set up so is at home both on road and track.

The total investment into this 993 easily runs past £50,000, making the final car stunning value for money.

The Master Bates Brothers are good guys, won’t install half a dozen sub woofers however - thankfully.

£70k wouldn’t scratch the surface as you say.

I did a 3.0RSR FIA papers car some years ago from a 2.4S chassis and that was over £150k now probably £250k+.

A 964 RS lightweight is a very different thing entirely to an early air cooled car and I know you don’t have any experience of owning air cooled 911’s but your suggestion is logical.

At mid £150’s or so a 964 RS lightweight makes a compelling argument for a car that is what it started life as.

That’s where I’d be looking if £250-£300k for something ‘proper’ was out of budget.

To restore an original car to its correct ex-factory specification is very expensive these days, but may still be the safer route.

There seem to be numerous dubious 'backdates', 'evocations', 'replicas', 'homages' …..that are often just an indulgent mix of new, old and highly suspect components. And you would be very lucky to ever see your money back, IMO

Yes, the likes of Singer have it down to a fine art (at a price), but even with these the V5 identity will still be the donor car - a 1990s 964 with a colour change.

My two if I’d given them to Singer.

No doubt a good drive but silly money and way too fussy. You try and sell it too.
There are good and bad out there as regards resto companies, it’s an absolute minefield. Could write a book.
£70k won’t get you anywhere.

I believe a lot of people, who do these projects, enjoy the journey more than arriving at the destination.

I know of two who went through the long and expensive process, but then sold not long after completion - and not at a profit - when the novelty had worn off.

Might be better to buy someone else's effort, in Nov/Dec when the charm is less popular, at favourable price. Would still need a thorough PPI and probably a budget for detailing and running it properly.
