Suspected Input Shaft Bearing Issue
Discussion
Hi, all.
I have a 2007 Honda Civic 2.2 i-CTDI that has just over 120,000 miles on the clock. It has been making a grumbling/growling noise since just before having the clutch and flywheel changed, at 75,000 miles. I am now in a position where I can look at getting this issue finally sorted - but, I don't know what the issue is!
The noise comes whenever the car is idling. When the car is in neutral, or when I have the clutch depressed, the noise is present, and doesn't change in frequency or severity. However, when I select a gear and find the biting point, the noise goes away. Also, when the car is moving, the noise is not present - whether it is in gear, or in neutral. If I move backwards and forwards in my seat (so as to create some momentum in the car), the noise comes on and off in-sync with my movements.
The first thing that has been suggested is the flywheel - but this was changed along with the clutch, and the noise didn't change between the clutch and flywheel replacement. Also, I would imagine that the noise would go away if the clutch was depressed, in the case of a flywheel fault - but I don't know a lot about transmissions!
There have been suggestions thrown my way about bearings: the main two being the input shaft bearing and the clutch release bearing. The only other one is the thrust bearing, but I've got no issues with actually selecting gears or pulling away - aside from the usual DMF judder. Is there any way of testing for either bearing? Or, am I looking at something completely different?
Thanks in advance - and sorry if this is so ambiguous!

I've got exactly the same issue, different make/model, although it's intermittent. When I had it in for a service recently I described the issue to the indy specialist I use, and he immediately said the release bearing which surprised me because all the reading I'd done on it suggested the input bearing is the culprit.
He listened and as per usual the noise wasn't present so I've done nothing with it since . Interested to know opinions.

Must be a common thing, then - which is a good thing, I guess. Thanks for the reply - I'll get someone to have a good look at it - I just fancied having a crack at it myself! He listened and as per usual the noise wasn't present so I've done nothing with it since . Interested to know opinions.

If you are sitting stationary with the clutch depressed....and especially with a gear selected, NO parts are moving inside the gearbox. So the noise cannot be the input shaft bearing or any gearbox part.
That's what's confusing me - as it stops if I go to put it into gear without the clutch depressed (hitting the synchro-gate thing). Would this be any more of a tell-tale? Thanks for the reply, though. Gassing Station | Engines & Drivetrain | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
