Looking at putting in apple car play or some form of screen mirroring.... Where will I find my iDrive unit?? Anyone know?

In the past I've fitted TV into an X5 and that was located in the boot and was pretty easy. Hoping it's not behind the dash...

Any help or guidance appreciated.

Do you mean the main head unit for the CCC? It's in the dash behind the gear stick. As I remember you start by taking the screen out and work down. Check on realoem.com

Don't really know what to call it, the module that powers the screen?! It has a HDMI input that I want to access. On my old X5 it was positioned in the boot and access was easy enough. Didn't really want to have to the dash out !

Behind the HVAC unit...

It is only the trim, vents, front hvac control panel that need to come out.

As Ninja59 said it's behind the centre console. If you've ever fitted an after market radio it's easy enough There's a good video here

You'll need to put the gearstick in drive and disconnect the battery to get the head unit out. Make sure you
a. don't close the boot once you disconnect the battery
b. keep a jump pack *out of the boot* just in case the boot does get shut by an idiot (you can use the jump start points in the engine bay to reenergise the boot release in the drivers foot well if you need it)
c. when you reconnect the battery don't panic when the dashboard throws all the big red warning lights when you put the ignition on to reset the gear stick. Reset the gear stick, then disconnect the battery and reconnect it, that should reset the warning lights.

Ask me how I know...

The 640d is an F12 and all the advice in this thread seems to relate to the E63 6 Series instead.

The gearshifter for example on an F12 won't move when it goes into drive, its digital and stays in the same position. If its anything like my F10 then you dont really need to do anything more than remove the HVAC unit and it comes out quite easily.

I'm not planning on getting Apple Car Play, I wanted to get a HDMI screen mirroring box so my passengers can watch a film or some catchup TV on my trips down South from their phone. You can't do this with Apple Car Play I don't think.
