Been messing about with the cars today and decided to put standard exhaust back on the cerb. Having just taken it out for an ethusiastic test drive. It makes so much more sense as a complete package, your brain isn't being bombarded with the volcanos noise from the exhaust that was on the car when I purchased it. It just feels right without 100% of the drama, I'm happy with 70% of the drama with standard exhaust. It's still running with out the cats, not sure what difference that makes?

How many of you, run standard exhaust, or how many swapped back to standard exhaust?

Have to say the exhausts I have just taken off were not much more than a straight through pipe with a baked bean sized silencer!

Best option (IMO) is get a decent system made for it..

I've got sports rear cans with some extra silencers in the mid sections, and it is one of the quieter Cerbs. Just the sports rear cans was a bit much for me too.

The standard rear box can be a bit restrictive.

I have the decat large bore sports pipes feeding into the ACT Quiet back box, works well for me. About 95db when tested at tracks.

Mine had the cats still in but with the factory sports exhaust option. I thought that was a nice happy medium. Quite a few go back to the standard exhaust from what I read though.

I don’t have cats and had to put the original exhaust pipes back on when I bought the car 3 years ago. It was too loud with the sports exhausts on.

Wotcha Biggs ! wavey

I have to put mine back on every year to get it through our equivalent of the MOT (I'm in Luxembourg)
which is a bit of a pain
BUT
Practice makes....etc banghead

I am hoping to achieve the ultimate Nirvana of a non-banging (against the chassis) exhaust but I think I'm a few more replacements off that.

Also dreamed of Cross-Over pipe to replace the Cats but no-one seems to know/talk of them anymore frown

Obviously it depends on the noise of your system as to how much noise the cats drop, but I have the ACT quiet system, 2.5" bore, no Cats. The cats drop my exhaust noise by 8db from 106db to 98db at 5k revs

but I run with cats out because of the heat. With them out, the cabin is cooler, the gearbox and gear lever doesn't get too hot to touch etc.
I have ACT trackday cans to drop my car to 96db if needed.

Incidently, without the massive rear box under the boot area, I lost 12kg of weight from the rear over it's replacement system. It was also the lowest point at the rear, giving me only 90- 100mm clearance from the road. I used to have to jack the rear up to stop clouting the box.

When I bought my car it had sports tails on

As a result the only tracks I could always pass noise tests for were Anglesey and the Ring

The track day cans helped a bit, but it was touch and go whether I could pass 105 static because it was dependent on the tester not knowing what the red line was ("Yes it's V8, about 5800 red line I guess")

Eventually I found a beat up back box from our friends in Northumberland, which appears to be a Silverstone Performance unit, and it weighs a ton

But I can now drive across Europe without developing a non-stop headache, and according to Joolz it is well made and I'm not sacrificing any power with it either

Also, when I go to quiet tracks like Zolder, I can shove some extra restrictors up the abnormally large tailpipes

I got mine from ACT, as it looks like the original, but is stainless steel. It’s made by the original company JP for ACT.

https://www.actproducts.co.uk/product/sj10s42-cerb...

That said, I can’t help thinking it’s louder than the original. That or my memory’s blurred.

I also have the ACT tuned length manifolds, that added 2db, but also 20bhp from the cast cracked ones...

I had a lot of issues with mine and with SP themselves. I had one of the early ones as it appeared to be the complete answer, performance and quiet. Basically they said it would do 98db but they 'forgot' to say that was on their test car, with the cats in at 2k revs. It did 106-108db at 5k revs.
It was also fitted badly and was poorly made with one rear tailpipe being bent offset. It went back to SP for a week, who blamed my engine, my tune, ran my car around for 200 miles saying it just needed running in and left the car with no fuel on collection and the engine covered in oil where they'f had the camshaft covers off and left it leaking. They also caused £2k damage to the rear valence as it was badly fitted and was banging against it, burnt and cracked it.
I returned it, never got the refund promised. I sued them in court won all damages and refund and they shut the business and went elsewhere and sold my exhaust as a secondhand unit to someone else and I never got the money back. £3500 down the drain.

I believe the later ACT provided ones are better made, but they are heavy. I saved around 15kg with the ACT exhaust system and more rear road clearance.

ACT system I have, which is now 11 years old and still pefect, has silencing in the tailpipes also

I find it's a a good compromise between a good exhaust note and not noisy. However 1 1years on I'm sure there's other systems available.
There was talk of a valved exhaust system at one point, did that ever go anywhere?

£1.60 in Halfords

TVR parts - £3 plus 7.50 postage
https://tvr-parts.com/tvr-parts/part-details/tvr-s...

or it's a Hex403 mount from Halfords for £1.60
https://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/garage-equ...

Universal Oval four hole Exhaust Mount
Dimensions: 70mm High & 50mm Wide

I found the easiest way was to remove the hanger mount from the bodywork and exhaust put the rubber on the two parts the bolt it to the bodywork again, then attach the exhaust. That way you can swear at fitting the rubber whilst you have plenty of room , rather than under the car biggrin

I found putting the rubber mounts in a pot of boiling water for a few minutes helped me refit my exhaust, that and some copper ease......and a crowbar.

If you want a quieter car AND more power, try turbocharging it. Knocked 10 decibels off my decatted Chimaera. hehe

Forced induction on a SOHC car is always going to be a difficult proposition

NA cam timing bears no relation to Forced induction, so you are either going to have to spend a fortune tuning your cams, or you are going to go for a moderate compromise

Paul's fabrication skills are awesome, but I'm not sure whether the car was ever truly usable
