My son is generally very bright, High 1st in accoustic engineering, currently doing a masters looking at the way computers interpret and use human language. He generally also has excellent common sense - except - he has just got a tattoo on the top of his head, its quite large.

Although he is 23 years old and free to choose his own path in life, it would be fair to say his mother is in shock.

So the question is - do people think this will impact his employment prospects or is the modern world more relaxed than it used to be? As an employer myself I don't think I would be bothered except in some client facing situations.

I love tattoos, I have several, but that is a Muppet thing to do unless he can grow his hair over it.

The industry he's chosen may be more artistic and relaxed, but FFS.

I take it, its of a p*nis? Because that's a proper stupid thing to do.

I can’t see how it won’t affect his employment prospects.

I was about to say 'not at all' and then read it properly as to where the tattoo was and I am going to change that to 'it depends'.

If he wants to work in IT, and the way you describe what he is doing then it would appear so, then probably not. It will limit the role as I would not put him in front of a customer.

Very bright people dont get a tattoo on the top of their head.
Working in IT hardly anyone has a visible tattoo here, but we are an older bunch. Maybe they are all the rage with millennials.

Spend some time in the Lounge section, there are various tattoo threads to read in there.
Bit of a daft question really as it's a bit late now and he's soon going to find out. He could always wear a hat I suppose, I know someone whose head I have never seen, although he does a practical job, not in an office.
Change religion perhaps so he can permanently wear a hat? laugh

Shouldn't matter at all, depending on his industry.. i'm covered in visible tattoos and never had any issues getting or keeping jobs as a design engineer/product designer, my current employer hasn't raised it, and if they did I would leave.

EDIT, ah just seen where it is (i blame the heat)... that's brave.

Head/neck/face tattoos aren't quite as mainstream acceptable as arms/legs...but times are changing.

That does sound like a rubbish tattoo and it's certainly a stupid place to have one.

Worst case I think it's about 6 treatments over about a year and £1000 plus to have it lasered off (I had a google for a friend once, I'm not an expert).

I'm going to assume he already has the more common arms and other places tattooed as a lot of tattooists

won't do work on the more "in your face" areas unless the person is a serious "collector"

Where's that photo showing where to locate tattoos on your body in relation to your desire/hope to get a job.
Essentially any tats on the head where considered to place you in the "never want to work, will remain on the dole"

When you say "on the top of his head" do you mean literally on the top or side and his hair is shaved??

I have no issue with tattoos but when I see something other than arms, legs etc it does make me wonder what sort of judgement that person has or had to do something so "unique".

As for job prospects? Who knows, its more extreme but I know of at least one person who have "left" the school I work in because they were heavily and visibly tattooed which only became apparent after interview.

That's a nice piece, pretty hardcore placement!

He can always grow his hair back to cover it i suppose, but in 20 years time that may no longer be an option!

As long as he is good enough, what does it matter what he looks like thumbup

Eccentricity may work well for him in his field

I hope he is tall!

I have a full sleeve tattoo up to my wrist with more tattoos to come, however I wouldn't get a tattoo that couldn't be covered up for employment reasons.

I actually have a great employer and I'm able to wear short sleeves with no problems but some employers might not be so understanding.
