I recently just bought a used car where the car dealer told us from the start that the car had 2 keys. We went through negotiations without needing to mention it as he had assured us that there were 2, had all the other problems sorted on the car. When the car was picked it up we had to deal with another salesman who said that the car wasnt advertised with 2 keys and said that the previous salesman had told him there was 1. Just wondering where I stand as a new key is around £300 and I purchased the car at that price with the idea that there were 2 keys. Has anyone had this problem or something similar?

He told you at the start, or he told you from the start?

Unless he's repeatedly confirmed it had two keys then it's unfortunate, if he did say it regularly and you had it confirmed in the contract that's different.

He told us just before we signed that it had 2 keys, he only noted down that alloys needed repairing, a badge missing as well as a scratch on the bumper. Nothing said about there being 1 key until we picked it up, I've been away a week so it's the only chance I've had to try sort it so just a bit lost.

You'll need to prove that they lied and if you can't you'll need to find a auto electrician to get you a second key

I'm confused? when you went to pick it up you were told there was only one key, but still bought it anyway?

Do you have original advert with the 2 keys claim? Else sounds like you will have to suck it up.

Why didnt you ask for a refund there and then and not take it home if it only had one key, or why didnt you get them to confirm they would get the 2nd made and take the car under that protest and get it noted down?

Sounds like you accepted a car with one key.

Dealers lie, lots.

Complain at pick up, which I assume you didn’t do. Not much you can do now, unless it’s written down somewhere, which I assume it isn’t?

Ask them to contact previous owner(if it was taken in PX by them) GDPR (blah blah).
If its forthcoming then great, if its not, then..........?
Unfortunately, used cars arrive with one key, 3 keys, the wrong keys, broken keys, all sorts.
Its not the dealer that loses or breaks them, its the previous owners.
I don't even get into conversations with keys, its the bain of a dealers life, if its got one key, I tell the customer at point of first viewing, 'only one key I'm afraid' then leave it to the customer to carry on viewing.
Invariably, the conversation conveniently gets forgotten about until handover day, when you hand over one key and they then question where the other is.
'Told you when you viewed it, it only came with one' is the default answer.
Covered your own ass then.
I can only give you what it came with.

All the sales people I've ever trained have been told.

Anything you suggest, or promise, up to, and including the point of sale, I have to stand by.

So in this case OP you should be pushing for that second key.

Yes you should have made a point of it when you collected it, but you've been miss sold.

Large dealer with a head office?

Or smaller dealer?

Sorry I've been a little vague. Somebody else picked the car up for me, he signed an "Acceptance of Vehicle Advertisement Critea" form where hes basically saying that hes happy with the vehicle. Underneath this is another part which says "Acceptance of Vehicle Overall Condition" under this it says that; This is to certify that its condition and what not but also says, "Any noted defects that need rectification and agreed between dealer and customer" under here he has written that there is no spare key along with all the other repairs, I imagine if its under here it needs rectifying as it says above.

If the dealer has told me there's 2 keys, sold it with 1 but under parts that need rectifying is that theres only 1 key then they're in the wrong? Please correct me if I'm in the wrong.

This is a main dealer but its their own smaller company that deals with cars of different makes.

If they've written on the final collection invoice that there's only one key, and your friend has signed, and competed the deal, then I'm afraid the dealer is off the hook.

It was at this point it should have been sorted as signing that paperwork is acceptance that there's only one key if clearly written on that final piece of paperwork.

They made it clear and you had a chance to walk away.

Sorry.

It's only because the document which was signed says that we accepted the car knowing that a badge still needed fitting, which was being done by them and the spare key which still needed rectifying by them along with the badge.

I'm a bit lost now.

Did that final piece of paperwork say that the key is to follow?

Or that there is only one key?

On the document which was signed there was an area for things that still need rectifying. Under this they wrote that a badge needed fitting but they also wrote that the spare key was missing. I'm going to speak to the dealership tomorrow morning but I assumed that this was them agreeing to supplying another key.

Ok..

I think you'll be fine then if it's in an area that says "still need rectifying"

I must say though, all the places I've worked I've never seen a box labelled as such on a final invoice.

An order form maybe, but not the final one.

Hope they sort it for you.

Depending on what car it is some times the key needs programming to the car.

Were there two keys on the fob when you test drove it?

They usually keep them together so they aren't lost, so if only one key was present at the test drive, I'd assume that there was only one, regardless of what the sales guy told you.

People make mistakes...

He came out with just the one but told us that the other was inside, I understand people made mistakes but it's going to cost me £300 for somethinthing I shouldn't have been paying for in the first place.

You might have a bit of a fight on your hands as all that was stated on the form was the key was missing, not to supply another.
