Hi All,

Recently changed the oil on my wife's 120i (2005 90,000 miles, N46 engine) from the unknown oil it had when we bought it to Fuchs Titan fully synthetic as recommended by Opie Oils.

before the change it needed a litre top up every 1500-2000 miles which i think was reasonable. the CCv system has been replaced also and MOT emissions are fine.

since the change it is going through a litre every 300-500 miles which is massively excessive and has blue smoke coming out of the exhaust under load

i think that the new oil is too thin and getting past some probably well worn rings and seals

my question is, can i go slightly thicker on the oil to prevent this? its slightly frustrating as the oil was £60 and i think we've burnt most of it

Blue smoke under load indicates the likely cause to be rings.

You can try it, but it is unlikely to do much, did you definitely use the correct grade as per manufacturers information rather than Opie recommendation?

Before changing the oil to something less viscous, I would see if you can find out what oil is in there just now and confirm against your manufacturer's manual that it meets the required specs.

Also might be worth confirming you don't have a subtle leak somewhere, such as from the oil filter or sump plug.

The blue smoke definitely seems like it's burning oil, but also might have been an ongoing problem that you've perhaps not noticed until this oil change.

If you've burnt most of the oil and haven't replaced it, make sure you've not driving the car without enough oil in it.

no oil leaks at all anywhere on the car, its definitely coming out of the exhaust were topping up as we go (just put another litre in today)

car is probably a bit tired at this age and mileage but not happened at all until this new oil went in

Maybe the previous owner filled it with 20w50 or something?

90,000 miles is not a lot these days for an engine to be worn. Unless it has been neglected that is !

i hope not, the receipt from the garage says castrol 5w-30 and weve probably topped up 4 litres this year with mobil1 1 5w-30 as its slowly used oil (does about 13,000 miles a year) so even if it had been bodged there wouldnt be much of that oil left in the engine anyway

What have Opie Oils had to say about it?

Quick update:

Since draining the oil and filling with Mobile1 5w-30 (same viscosity) we've had no puffs of smoke or oil consumption.

Would be an idea to inform Opie Oils, then compare the data sheets on the oil. You may find you were unlucky and have a bad batch, or it just doesn't seem to work with the engine / clearances.
