718S vs 718 base - SOUND.
Discussion
I've had a couple of 2.0's out to try and convince myself to sell my 981 2.7.
To be honest, the noise of the engine changes all the time.....weird....on the odd occasion, it can sound quite nice. But there doesn't seem to be any consistency. I wouldn't pay for an S. And as for the £65K+ PDK GTS's in my local OPC they had kicking around.....well.....NO WAY! CAn't believe they will sound any better.
I am not 'anti' the 718 ...I enjoyed the drive and could live with the engine. I did note, it felt VERY hot near the vents on a normal day. I reckon if you drive one hard yesterday, it would melt the vents!!

I’m convinced that Porsche have been tweaking the sound of the 718 since it was released. I’ve had two 718S on loan and they sounded completely different to each other one being much louder and more rorty(neither had PsE) though the fundamental tone was similar.
There was a pretty much brand new 19 plate 718 Boxster around Lymington this afternoon, sounded as crappy as all of them, sorry!dreamcar said:

How are you DC ? Still running the ‘ol 981 GTS ?
Had a 2.0 with PSE for 2.5 years and 23,000 miles.
Had a 2.0T for 10 days.
For what it’s worth the new T sounds very different in three ways. Excuse the poor adjectives but it’s far less, rattley, agricultural, tappety. It still ain’t 6cyl smooth but sounds nicer than my previous 718. Secondly, it’s far quieter overall, both inside and outside. Finally, there are zero pops, farts, bangs on the overrun compared to the previous PSE.
I liked the farty, pops and bangs.

I have an S and like the sound, each to their own and all that. I had a GTS the last two days and the sound is completely different, it’s really quiet even on startup , absolutely no character whatsoever. Is this down to the new Gas Particulate Filters?
My S is quite loud on startup and whilst driving actually, I feel the tone has changed somewhat since the engine has run in, maybe i’m Imagining that.
Either way , if the new GTS is anything to go by then the newer ones maybe quieter and if you hate the sound then that might be seen as a good thing for some.

Sound changes hugely as the miles go on. Not driven a GPF version but the earlier 718 models after they’ve loosened up sound fantastic, I say this after spending some time with a friend’s 981 last weekend. They can sound rough on startup, but disconnecting the sound aktor makes a big difference as well. Imo and so on, etc etc...

Looks like the particulate filter or other evolving emissions regulations means the end of pops&bangs, at least in Porsches: The naturally aspirated 718 GT4 also does not deliver any pops&bangs.Had a 2.0T for 10 days.
