Hi guys

My daily snotter and uber reliable white good Accord Tourer has had a rough idle when cold for a while. The car is on 175k but has had 10k oil changes (did them myself) with Castro edge oil since I’ve owned it on 50k.

One of the forum diagnosis was that the valve clearances can get out over time and cause a rough idle. So today I whipped the cam cover off and sure enough, the intakes were all one feeler gauge too loose and the exhaust one too tight.

I’ve gapped them right and on the only cold start I have done today it seems to have cured the problem. Happy days.

However I did feel for play in the chain whilst I had access and I’m not sure if this or normal? This engine has an oil fed chain guide/ tensioner and I don’t know if it would take up the slack when it has oil pressure?

Anyways, I took a YouTube video here. All comments welcome

Please save my shed! I adore the old girl. hehe

Should I be sizing up a chain kit in the near future?

If the chain has stretched, generally, you will get a rattle on start up that goes away after a second or two while the tensioner gets oil pressure.

There does seem to be a fair amount of slack on the video though, not too sure whether it's normal - I had the rocker cover off my K24 the other week, and there was no play at all in the chain but it was changed 20k ago.

My chain lasted 250k before slipping a few teeth - Luckily, no damage other than to my wallet!

If you're anywhere near Cannock, Honda HQ can do chain and tensioner for under £500.

On the upside, the top end of your engine looks spotless which is more than can be said for mine! (Although it's done 277k!)
