I have a 2002 Targa (26000 miles) with sports exhaust. In last few days the exhaust note has changed. When idle, it sounds like a clatter. It feels as something is loose on the exhaust pipe. But at speed 20 + the sound is normal. Is my exhaust gone? What is the average life of sports exhaust? And what would be the damage to get it fixed. Any ideas folks?

i had exactly the same thing happen with my sports exhaust on the c4s. is it worse when you first start the car form cold?

i took it down to opc reading and although i can't remember what they said it was (how useful am I?!) it was a warranty matter.

hope this helps

Fom your description it sounds like a loose baffle or possibly a loose heat shield. Probably best to get it checked out, it wont cure itself!

I had the same on my 996 after a 2000 mile trip to Italy. However, not a sportsexhaust, it turned out to be a broken catalyst. First the OPC did not want to cover it under the extended warranty (wear and tear) but I had only done 20.000 miles and with a bit of haggling they ended up covering app half the bill. If was told by my dealer that it is unusual that the catalyst packs up after only 20.000 miles. When exchanging it they discovered that the catalyst inside was a US version - adding a couple of 100 pounds and a week waiting time so total bill was app 750.00 !. I was told that you can drive with that rattle and that it will pass the MOT but then again it is a disturbing noice which tends to go away when the engine gets warmed up.
