Cheap barge circa 2k

Looking for a cheap barge for work duties.

I've delved into the grim world of Facebook market place and there is a surprising amount of choice. Primarily looking diesel and automatic.

Plenty of:
W211 and W203 E and C classes about
Fair amount of E60 5ers and less so on the E39
Also spotted a nice S80 D5 for £1500.

Any comments on the above? Mercs appeal but it is that period of Mercedes taking a quality dive.

Main thing is that its cheap, 2k or less, and is generally reliable. Can do my own bodges and services at work.

As long as you get a 2003 onwards Mercedes you'll be fine the 5/6 inline diesels are pretty much bulletproof, like all automatics you'll need to make sure the fluids & filters have been changed if there's no evidence of this being done then you'll need to factor £200-250 to get this done, I'd be haggling this off the price:

Yeah I had heard the engines are pretty good in the reliability stakes. A smooth 6 would be nice. I read that the 5 is a bit agricultural though.

So is a 270 a 5? And 280/320/350 a 6?

The 5 cylinder is a decent engine just not as smooth 6 but a good engine nonetheless it responds well to a remap & replacement air filter.
