There's a fair bit of hate for these, but I think it primarily comes from a misunderstanding of the fact that it is a robotised manual, where people are expecting a TC / CVT box and not quite getting it.
I've been for a little nip around in one of the members' cars, Lightningslow on the Civinfo, and they're more than capable of getting going very quickly off the line and shifting nice and smoothly / quickly when driven to the box.
As with many autos now, they adapt to the drivers' style continously, so if it doesn't feel quite right on a test drive, you may find it improves over time.
That being said, maintainence isn't so great - The equipement for maintainence is virtually Honda dealer only (Needs HDS for most calibration operations etc), and with the 8G now being classed as a historical model parts prices are going up for new bits. That being said, there's a lot of 8Gs about so for general body bits / engine parts you'll be well served by breakers and the like.
There's a few issues with the box (Cog and exclaimation mark) which can crop up, usually due to actuator faults.
On from the transmission, and to the car itself, I can't offer too much other than what I've read as I'm in a 9G without the R18, the 8G civic gets some criticism for the firm ride.
The engine itself, The R18, is fairly well paired to the Civic 8G, and a pretty rock solid unit; Being a simple NA Engine, and one that has been in production and use across the world for a fairly long time, it's very proven and parts availability (As above) is very good for the engine itself.

I had a manual version after trying a few I-shifts. I didn't much like the I-shift feel and the bottom line is they are not liked that much when it comes to selling either, so don't pay too much. However, there are some 'full auto' versions of that car available on 08 plates. I think they are a much better option and I would have bought one but didn't offer enough, hence ending up with a manual. Check if it leaks water into the rear plastic panel and lights in the tallgate.
Thanks guys, I ended up getting a 2006 jazz! She needed a car ASAP so we had to take what we could get within reasonable distance yesterday. I did check a 2007 Civic 1.8 EX ishift last week from a dealer but amazingly the auto box was broken so that car was out.
There was a nice 2007 GT trim in Southampton but the seller was not around till Friday next as he was on holiday. It was priced good, 2400GBP which is the same as I paid for the jazz with 80k miles.
She will only have the car a year or so until she gets a more newer one but it's fine for the moment. It's lively enough on the motorway also.
