I currently have my own small company that is doing well but I hate it. I really want to get out of what I’m doing but no idea where to start.

Happy to go back into employment but not sure what I want to do or what I’d be able to do.

I can close down my company with out issue or debts so no problem there.

My current line of work is diagnostics and engine building for heavy commercial engines and auto Gearboxs plus all the crap that comes with running a ltd company.

I just really need a change as my mental and physical health are really not doing well lately.

Any help or advise would be great from anyone who has made a similar change.

Do you have any contacts, suppliers or manufacturers, that you could approach? They may need technical support or sales roles etc.

If you want a complete change then what are you interested in? What are you good at?

Do you have a significant other? Any dependents? Or are you free to disappear and do whatever you like?

In addition:

- How much pa do you need to earn?

- Whilst you’re unsure what you’d like to do; is there anything you don’t want to do?

Do you want to stick with mechanical stuff like you’re doing now but without the hassle of owning and running your own company or branch out to something completely different?

Would you be happy being a PAYE drone or a contractor type role?

Are you happy having a boss again?

Need a bit more info!

I have been doing the same thing for damn near it 20 years now and really want a change, A new challenge.

Ideally in a different area.

Wife and 2yo daughter so can really just run off over seas.

Hopefully a job where i'm not covered in oil and crap every day. Be nice to go to work and come home in the same state.

I don't think I mind having a boss again but i do work much better when left well alone.

pay wise 3.5-4 a month.

Always being good with mechanical type stuff, just find it easy to work out how anything works and able to take apart or build/repair.

I know i don't want to sit at a desk behind a keyboard all day. id rather hang my self.

I'd strongly advise that that you tackle and address the last points here before making any decision; particularly the mental health issue. You need to establish what really is at the root of this. The danger in not doing so is that you could be making a critical decision on the belief that that decision will be the cure when in fact it won't be and could make matters worse.

Stepping back into employment is not as easy as it sounds. It requires a mental re-set that can take a lot of time and requires a clear mind as well. Carrying around other baggage will not be ideal.

How about wind turbines? Lots of new capacity opening up around the UK and will be a 20 year+ program of work?

Did you mean that, or is it a typo? I know how it is with young children. hehe If you can run off overseas I can point you in the right direction.

Are there any well-paid jobs that an IT Manager (of multiple networks) could undertake with regards to wind turbines?

As in £3.5-4k pcm? thats a fairly sizeable salary even if it's before tax... can you afford to take a drop in pay? i think you would be lucky to change career and get anywhere near that, at least for a while.

You think you won't mind working for a boss, but you will.
It's the bullsh*t that get's you, it's not just about doing your job, it's about doing all the pointless stuff that somebody made up to solve problems that didn't exist.

You could work as an IT manager at a company that uses the electricity generated by the wind turbines?

18 months ago, after almost 20 years working in the travel industry, I decided I’d had enough and wanted out.

Moved into residential property sales, which was something that always interested me, and I absolutely loved it. Now found a niche working in Commercial property and I am working towards an Assoc RICS qualification - I’m 46 now btw.

I had to accept to take a hit of pretty much 50% on my basic salary but I’m now earning well in excess of my former salary, albeit it’s made up differently through commissions rather than just a fixed higher basic.

You are skilled in your specific trade, so to command a similar salary you’ll need to be able to transfer what you’re currently doing (and possibly more) into any new role, which may be the challenge as I found but there will be jobs out there, just think laterally.

There’s an element of having to start from scratch again, but if you’re motivated then you’ll make it work. Good luck.

+1 for the mental health issue.

I left one job to go to another thinking it was the cause of my depression. It wasn't.
