ultra HD help please
Discussion
I leave technical stuff to the other half, but I think I'm about to ask the impossible and what I want can't be done.
TV is a Philips 49PUS6401/12
Amp for surround sound is a Pioneer VSX 323
Sky Q 2TB Box
Am I right in thinking that I can get Ultra HD through the TV but if I want to run it through the surround as well I need a new amp? If so, how do I persuade a non F1 loving husband that this is absolutely necessary

Looks like your amp is UHD 4k ready, so hdmi from skyq to amp input, hdmi from amp output to tv should be fine.
I think he tried that last night and it was coming up with this:Annoyingly he's off with work for a few days now and I don't know one end of a HDMI port from the other so will have to go through it all again when he gets back.
If he can sort it by Budapest at the weekend I'll be happy

Also I think you need to have multi room in order to get UHD broadcasts from Sky Q. So if you don't you're wasting your time anyway
.
Oh balls.
.Well thats put the Kybosh on that then.
Thanks anyway both of you.
Edited to add, yes, you're right:
To watch in Ultra HD, you’ll need:
A Sky Q 2TB box with the Sky Q Multiscreen subscription.

Something else to consider. You could be in need a new faster HDMI cable as well even if the rest is correct. (if it says "high speed" on the existing ones then it will probably work)
However it is a snake oil market for cable sellers. If all the right bits are in place with subscription, TV HDMI ports correctly enabled etc. Amp is capable and correctly configured and it works, then obviously you will not need new ones. No point in wasting money.
If you need one then they come in around 5 or 10 quid for a few meters. Some places will try to fob you off with one for £80. There will be absolutely no difference between a good working £6 cable and a £80 cable. Apart from you lining the pockets of the £80 seller.
Distance does become a factor with 4K quicker than HD (obviously) and cost goes up a little bit.
FYI my 4K upgrade with BT, my old standard HDMI cables at 1.5 meters resulted in blocking and drop outs and no picture and audio all over the shop.
Done right 4K sport is superb. I don't get F1 though.

Thanks. Suspect he'll probably revisit this anyway as he doesn't like to be beatenHowever it is a snake oil market for cable sellers. Wont be paying for multiform though as it's not really worth it for the two of us just so one of us can watch the F1, though I imagine he's be persuadable if the football was in 4k

I don't have sky. I thought Sky were already doing footy in 4k? No idea with the bundle and pricing options (multisommitoranother already mentioned above, don't even know what that is).
Everyone (Sky and BT) seems to be kicking off with 4k added on with HDR and Dolby Atmos this year (the new bells an whistles they will bill us a fortune for).
BT does 4k very well, I expect Sky is the same. One sneaking in under the radar is Amazon, they snaffled a 20 match bundle for December that no one else wanted. Unlikely to be 4k though I expect, just HD. That would be via Prime.

As others have said but something also to try......
Connect the sky box directly to your tv for setup. The sky setup utility can be a bit picky.
There was an issue that my Sky Q didn't recognise I had a 10 bit panel (Samsung TV) when connected through the amp (Yamaha 4K). Despite everything being supposedly compatible it refused to confirm the setting. So I connected directly Sky to TV bypassuiing the amp. TV was then detected fine as 10 bit, set it all up and then reconnected through the amp using the new settings and everything was hunky dory and has been ever since.
Good luck.
