With wife and 9yr old son. Any tips on finding good accommodation locally; I'll try Airbnb.

It's not drunken people everywhere, saying that I'll be on a par at some point whilst there.

Kraków is ok for 2/3 days not a knockout imo.
Best thing I did was visit Zakopane , by bus 2.20 mins, it's a very vibrant ski resort be good fun for your lad.
Lots of people visit Auschwitz or salt mines if that's of interest to you.

Don't rule out 'apartment' hotels - stayed in them in other cities in Poland but unfortunately not Krakow so I can't give a recommendation.
Usually larger than normal hotel rooms and with kitchen etc.

Not full of drunk people - they made the English stag party groups unwelcome some time ago (thank god)!

Stay in town centre - then you can walk everywhere. Horse & carriage ride (your lad will like that!)
Certainly visit salt mines and Auchwitz is very well done.
Take 30 minute tram ride to Novahut to see what a true 70s communist town looks like. The tram ride is the best bit!!
Castle is worth a look around.

Lovely place to visit (but don't be drinking the 9% beer - it's just too good!!!)

I've stayed here https://en.queenhotel.pl was decent, 10 min stroll to the main square.

I didn't check the prices just now, but it was reasonable when I went considering the quality of the accommodation.

Krakow is dirt cheap for hotels, even the very best central places are a fraction of what similar accommodation would cost in the UK. Nice place.

I think I'll doing hotel and flights separately; easyJet seems to pick lowish quality and some are a fair walk from the action.

Possibly due to the way the Police are over there?

I've been told a few times by Pole's that about ten years ago the Police there became firmer.

Not sure how true that is but at work turned up to a number of pissed angry large Polish lads on two occasions and they suddenly stop their behaviour and on one of those occasions gone from violent to friendly/wary.

Whereas British lads are like a firework in a bottle.

Auschwitz/Birkenau is about 50 mins from Krakow. Well worth a visit to anyone going to Krakow.

It's essential if you go to Krakow IMO.

So Mrs Calobra is sceptical, she sees Lisbon, Split etc as more 'her' but I say try something new. She thinks the food will be typically Russian...

Will a faux sophisticat' be happy?

The food is not Russian. Plenty of choice in that respect. A faux sophisticating will be fine!

I’ve been to Krakow twice and stayed at antique apartments both times. Various apartments near to the main square and at a great price.

I agree with others, Auschwitz/birkenau are must visit locations if you go.

Plenty of restaurants, the food is very nice. Loved an Italian I went to, steak tartare was lovely in the hotel under our apartment. Ate rabbit in one place, the meat was nice but the sauce was like a weird Korma sauce which was different with potatoes and veg.

All in, I’d go back in an instant and probably will at some point soon.
