E36 325i wheel question

Pretty quick this one. Are 18" wheels too big on an e36 series beemer? I know they fit ok, but what are people's experiences of their effect on ride and handling?

I enquired with BMW when I was looking at changing wheels on my E36 and they recommended 17" max.

Ive seen a lot of E36's with 18's on and they look fantastic, but the ride isn't great, better to go for a 17.
