Families, can't pick 'em
Discussion
Having to spend time with my sister and her offspring as we're dealing with my mum and her late stage cancer.
Knew my niece was stuck up but jeez, I've never met such a supercilious prick, sneers and looks down at me constantly, and apparently I'm a misogynist and also a homophobe, because I said something about women using phones while driving, and men shouldn't wear pink shirts.
TBH I'm thinking it's a section of my family that needs cutting out of my life when all this is over.
Oh btw, she's 19, never done a day's work in her life and claims to have chronic fatigue syndrome, which she did have, but now seems to be an excuse to get her mum to run around after her, and get out of doing things she hasn't chosen.
Rant over, thanks, feel much better now

Why should men not wear pink shirts? What a strange stance.
It was a throwaway humourous comment, but I just don't like them, never have, and they were out of place in the engineering companies I worked in.Apparently though it's ok for her to criticise the dress sense of women who don't spend 1000s on Jimmy Choo shoes and handbags

She sounds alright to me.
She's got a very high opinion of herself as her friend at school was the grand daughter of the Earl/Duke/Something of Bath. She's just not a very nice person, her sibling and cousins are nice and fun to be around. She's not, even her cousins struggle to relate to her
Sounds like a right little charmer OP.
I recall my cousin being similarly obnoxious when he was 18. Sat round the table for a meal one time, he was just one on being rude to me and a smart little ar$e. Probably because he was sat with his first girlfriend thinking he's the big man.
I had one of those moments when the words just come out and I just calmly said something alone the lines of, 'This evening would be a lot better if you weren't such a c***!'. The table fell silent and for a number of years, that side of the family shunned me because rather than get to the bottom of his rudeness they all got hung up on the word I used. Shame! haha

Is she the only person in your life who says this kind of thing about you?
Ha. Yes it is. I'm opinionated (I wouldn't be on PH otherwise), but homophobic or misogynistic, certainly not.
The comment about the women and phones was just after I'd had a near miss with one pulling out on a roundabout in front of me. Comment was along the lines of "bloody women on their phones"
The shirt comment was after she'd gone on and on about people wearing things she decided were in appropriate.

Yeah what you've done there is removed his "out". Sometimes people prey on weakness or grey areas to be a I recall my cousin being similarly obnoxious when he was 18. Sorry to hear about your mum by the way, that's not nice.
Thanks. Yep it's not good, and she's fighting the medical team, and refuses to accept the situation (I suspect we might all be the same)She says she's coming home, but that's not possible, she can't even get out of bed anymore. It's incredibly sad, so could do without the family aggro

Don't engage.
Do grownup stuff and keep her opinions from getting in. Conversely, don't offer any of your own regarding her.
I never make any comments about her that's why I did it here :-)Do grownup stuff and keep her opinions from getting in. Conversely, don't offer any of your own regarding her.
We call the ones who behave like this pizza cutters: all edge and no point.

If you joked about it in a derogatory way, on some level you don't like it. You can't hide behind satire.
Not sure I understand, I don't like pink shirts, never have so in my mind that translates as shouldn't wear them.Of course other people can wear what they like, it's just a turn of phrase.
I'm not hiding behind anything.
I also don't think men should wear yellow shirts, does that make me something-phobic too?

My mum was the same 20 years ago (age 52)She says she's coming home, but that's not possible, she can't even get out of bed anymore. It's incredibly sad, so could do without the family aggro
In St Lukes Hospice in Sheffield, she was still planning holidays for later that year. My dad was just nodding along with her "yes dear, ok dear".
It's horrible but the grieving process has already begun and it's not as horrific at the end.

I think the chances of your pink shirt issue not having deep root in some kind of phobia are vanishingly small . Could be wrong, but life is too short, to not judge people. Of course other people can wear what they like, it's just a turn of phrase.

Sadly my dad was the same 4 years ago. Finished up at Rotherham hospice, so my mum is adamant she's not going there as that means it's the end
