My 2005 Fireblade will not start and I have an MOT tomorrow 3pm!

It's hardly used so has been sat for months on an optimate.

Running fine when I parked it. Thought battery might have died as it was cranking over slowly but just chucked a new battery on and its still not starting.

Turns over fine, checked the kill switch, can hear fuel sloshing in the tank but the low fuel light did come once when I was trying to start it.

Any ideas? Can smell fuel, just turns over and nothing. Dash all lights up ok but when I turn the key I don't hear the fuel pump prime.

check your fuses?, fuel pipe blockage?

I'd try fresh fuel and the above. Surely the fuel pump should prime?

Maybe an immobiliser issue? Have you got an aftermarket alarm?

When you say checked kill switch. What do you mean, electrically or just that it is set right. They are a fault on the Blade. Having had this issue with mine I would start with checking that thoroughly It's a cheap fix at this stage. Don't do like I did and spent a small fortune on other stuff to find it was this relatively cheap part that had failed

Not sure if this is the same issue, but can try this.

The notes are from when I had a starting issue on my CBR.

Start by checking the fuses, then check you have a spark at the plugs.

You say you could smell fuel but can't hear the fuel pump prime; you wouldn't smell fuel if it isn't priming so I would be looking at sparks/immobiliser first.

More a question than answer... If the fuel pump had run once and the rail was full would you keep hearing it prime or would it know it was full and not try each time you turn the ignition on?

So far I have stripped the fairing off and taken the alarm unit (system 3) apart, checked the output and found 1 of the 2 immobiliser circuits permanently open, the other permanently closed (this was the starter) so the starter would turn even with the immobiliser on. I have shorted both with wire now, engine turns but still no fire. I have 12v at the other circuit but wherever it leads could be duff.

The kill switch toggles with dashboard recycling with the FI and HESD icons so I'm sure its working correctly.

Checking for spark isn't going to happen, its 4 coil sticks under a ton of injectors and airbox/fuel tank, the plugs and coils were replaced in the last 5 years and probably sub 500 miles. Was a nightmare to do.

I have checked the FI fuse under the seat and the whole fusebox on the left of the bike, only one I haven't checked is the main fuse but the bike isn't completely dead so that's fine.

Have you tried filling it up with fresh fuel? This would be my first priority especially if the low fuel light is on and the bike has been sitting for a while.

I'd be trying to dilute the old fuel out (or drain it preferably) and use new fuel.

I'd run the starter for 10 seconds, then rest for 10 seconds, run for 10, rest for 10. Alternate this a few times. Then give it a minute to cool. Repeat again.

The system 3 is getting on a bit. I'd probably suggest just removing it, especially if you already have HISS or similar. I can understand if this is not an option for you though.

Depending on when it was last running the fuel tap might be blocked, their easy to clean out if it is, try some easy start to see what that does.

This one doesn't have a fuel tap

I haven't tried filling it up as I didn't want to end up having a full tank that I may need to remove, I may try this in the morning though.

The new battery has gotten weak so its on charge now, concerned about burning out the starter at this point so only running it for a few seconds.

Yeah the system 3 is ancient installed when new so 13/14 years on it, since I have bypassed the immobiliser I'll remove it eventually.

located the fuel pump relay, can hear/feel it click on then off as it should be priming.

Measured the voltage at the switch side and found 12v, shorted the pins to power the pump constantly.. nothing, its just not running.

Could the fuel pump have failed? Seems unlikely to me.

Assuming 12V is getting all the way down to the pump, could well be.

Sounds like you've given it a good digging into.

Personally, I would drain the fuel and put a bit of fresh stuff in, the flashpoint does go off after several months.

At least it will eliminate this if it doesn't work.

Don't panic, you can always put back your MOT.
