Twitter account cancelled because of Liam Neeson

So - after a five-year blemish-free Twitter record and more than 500 Followers Twitter has permanently suspended my Twitter account for "threatening violence"

My crime? Responding to a thread about favourite movie quotes with the famous Liam Neeson "I have special skills .. I will find you and I willl kill you" monologue from "Taken".

Now, I can believe some algorithm might have initially picked this up. But after considering my appeal in which I posted a link tot the movie sequence, the guardians of the nation's mortals at Twitter have advised "After investigating your appeal, we have determined that your account posted content that was threatening and/or promoting violence in violation of the Twitter Terms of Service. Accordingly, your account has been suspended and will not be restored".

Now, in comparison with getting sepsis this is no big deal. Part of me is quite relieved not to be tempted to log in to the tsunami of human stupidity that engulfs Twitter every day. But I am struggling to comprehend the mindset that considers a movie quote as a direct threat of violence. Especially when I read the other appalling threats and abuse that are the bread and butter of what passes for debate at twitter.

I'll probably start a backup account using different credentials and a VPN if I can be bothered to dive back into twitter.

I wonder if Jack Dorsey is aware of the fkwitery in his organisation.

Have you tried informing Twitter that you have special skills, skills that can make you a big problem for them, but if they reinstate your account etc etc.

Trouble is then you're probably committing yourself to wiping out twitter, which is bad for you but probably good for humanity.

I have over 10 THOUSAND likes on Twitter. Not mega by some standards.

But I think I should quit it too! But it's useful if you ignore the political stuff.

First my wife went on Facebook, and encouraged me to do the same, I politely declined, citing the fact that I thought that it was just for 13-14 y.o. girls, and was surprised that she’d got on it.
Then she opened a Twitter account, and urged me to have one too, I declined again.
After reading this thread, I think that I may have done the right thing.

You may joke, but.... I got banned from a thread discussing the series "Deadwood" for saying "cocksuckers", which as any fan will know, was a commonly-used phrase by one of the main characters. Apparently I was being abusive

I read something the other day written by someone who had been banned from twitter for using the word "cracker". That well k ow insult from African Americans to white Americans. Except she was talking about crackers like cheese and crackers.

Algorithms get it wrong, then often humans or AI double down because they are badly trained.

That's about 99% of the 'jokes' on there. If ever you needed a bellwether of the level of intelligence on PH these days, that thread is it (well, that and the Classic From The Missus thread that clearly demonstrates the level of stupidity your current average poster is happy to shackle himself to).

ETA - it seems I am in good company. Actor James Woods, with millions of followers, had his account permanently suspended for repeating a famous quote. Even Trump called it “surprising”.
