I have just purchased a 19 year old Boxster and there is no illumination on the tiptronic gearshift, is this normal ?

Our 987 indicates the current gear on the dash, not the selector.

Don’t know if the 986 is the same.

Thanks for that, it seems strange that I have to put on the interior light to see where reverse is.

The dash should have the display on the RHS as in the photo; it lights up the selected position; no need to switch on interior light just move it and watch the display - or am I missing something??

Thank you for that Pope. I do have the indications on the dash but it was on the lever itself that I was wondering should have inbuilt illumination on it.

You'll not need it,
If it's your first auto, you'll soon work out where it is, one down from park and two up from drive.
It'll be second nature after a few days

And if its like most other automatics, there'll be detents etc to stop you accidentally putting in the wrong gear.
