Having test riden twice and had my heart set on replacing my KTM 690 Duke with the new 790, I bought a CBR.

Long story short...its all Ron Haslem's fault, did one of their race schools on a CBR650R and rather liked, so booked a test ride on one...ordered one.

Picked it up on Friday, rode it the long way home...got a wasp in my helmet...stung me to f**k as I panic swerved, stopped and ripped my helmet off...little scumbag...almost made me drop my new bike.

Only issue with the bike is that unfortuantly Honda have a backlog on their quick shifters so that and the heated grips will be fitted at the 600 mile service. So far absolutely loving it, even the run into work on London this morning was great fun, sure the new bike novelty will wear off!

Here she is;

Presumably it's some modern laws that dictates these ridiculous rear plate hangers? They just look so completely bizarre!

Looks great, Honda really have reinvented the middleweight sports category with that bike.

I can distinctly remember in the early 90s, riding around town with open visor then being stung in the eyebrow by a wasp that had flown in. Random wildlife incidents are what keeps me wearing a full face helmet......bugs, bees, birds seem to commit suicide on me or the bike regularly. Last week it was a large crow flying across my path that went under the front wheel completely with a bump.

Not usually a fan of matte bikes but that looks really good and that front end shot looks very mean and moody, enjoy the new toy and well done not letting the bees win or that would have been a sting to the wallet ......

I hadn't really noticed it until you mentioned it but now that you have I can't understand it either.

Thankfully there's these on the market https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/R-G-TAIL-TIDY-LICENCE-P...

Great looking bike OP, enjoy!

Number plate needs to be behind the rear tyre......

Looks absolutely belting that, was chatting to a bloke a couple of weeks ago with one and he loved it.

Yep, the construction regs say that the numberplate and reflector have to be the rearmost part of the bike iirc, hence these big plastic arms which move the plate out past the rear wheel.

yep...the number plate hanger is a disgrace...I have a new one on order so will get that put on at the 600 mile service with everything else.

Thanks for the comments, really very pleased with it, seems like a great do it all bike for me, few novice trackdays a few longer trips and getting too and from work.

The matt black I wasnt sure about until I saw it in the flesh, the red one just didnt do it for me.

I genuinely think these CBRs are some of the best looking bikes around. Matte black looks mean!
I'll have mine in red though please!
My step-dad got a wasp stuck in his lid when they were first made compulsory in the 70s (I think). He reports it's surprising and painful hehe

They might as well just go back to fitting mudguards.

A mudguard would, at least, be useful. smile

Presumably an old law but it's a modern trend to have different geometry. Look at older bikes and the pillion seat/hump will extend back to about the edge of the rear wheel. Not sure if modern bikes have moved the rider forward, or just shortened the rear subframe.

On the plus side, and unusually for modern bikes, they seem to have fitted a decent looking exhaust to it rather than bolting a bloody great dustbin to the side! Nice looking machine.

talking of exhausts...if the KTM790 had an exhaust like the prototype pretty sure I would have pressed the button on one of those, just can't get to grips with the massive one the production one has.

Luckily my mulling over led me to the CBR

I like that!

Is it just the photo angle or does it run a fairly small back tyre?

Really? I think the standard exhaust looks pretty good, the Akra doesn't do it many favours I'd say.

The prototype was unrealistically bonkers.

Great looking bike OP. Nice to see some decent looking bikes that aren't just angles (talking to you Yamaha).

Shortened the subframe (and the seat).

If you look at a CBR650R

VS an old school CBR600F

You'll see that the tank finishes on both a short way behind the swingarm pivot and the bike "ends" at the seat on the 650R while there 600F continues quite some way back. Plus the seat itself is massively bigger on the 600F!

I may be in a minority here....but I'd actually rather manufacturers designed to the rules rather than have to bodge some horrific abortion on to be legal.
