Is M coloured tape on the grill the most stupid, laughable mod ever to hit the BMW scene?

Recent laughs have been seeing it on a E92 335d, a clapped out E39 Touring and an old 1 Series of some sort. Utterly Deluded.

I'm trying to understand why someone would do it other than to fantasise about something they don't have?

Me and a few guys I know used to put French coloured electrical tape on our grilles. Saxos and Clios, now that wasn't a bad mod. whistle

Stuff like that done for years, twin spots to make an e21 316 look like a 320. M badges.

We are all different and have very different tastes, values, budgets and thought processes.

I too think it looks rubbish but I am sure the owners like it.

I saw a 3’series today, probably a 318d or 320d with both kidney grills done..... and an obligatory M badge on the boot

I’m trying to understand why anyone would give a toss what someone else does to their car.

When ones own life is so perfect. One has to belittle others I guess.

Not my cup of tea but it’s not on car. Thankfully I have better things to worry about.

I know someone who has an E46 325i Sport Touring and had an "incident" last year that resulted in him buying a 2nd hand bonnet complete with kidney grilles with "M" stripes which he decided to keep.

Given that his "Sport" had "M-Sport" seats, suspension and MV2 wheels complete with "M" badges on the gear-knob, steering wheel and each wheel I don't really see why "M" stripes on the grille are such an issue.

After all my Z4 Sport Coupe didn't have "M" stickers on the 108 split-rim wheels. confused

At the end of the day BMW will sell you a 114d covered with "M" badges now - it's just a trim level.

My first BMW was a £1400 Y Reg E46 330i Sport, I went from an auto Toyota Corolla to that. I was 19/20 years old and worshipped my BMW at the time.

Yes, I sprayed the wheels black, de badged it, put black BMW badges on it, sprayed the grill black, carbon wrapped the steering wheel and any piece of plastic I can find inside, I fitted the brightest number plate lights along with the fake xenon bulbs, I made every single light in the interior LED and I put a carbon black M badge on the bootlid. I wasted so much money on that car hehe

I tried to put the M colours on the grille but it was a crappy tape from eBay and it wouldn’t stick onto the grille so I gave up. I wouldn’t think twice about such a thing now but at the time, it was because of how excited I was to own such a car and I wanted the world to know I was in a fast sporty BMW.

Nowadays I’m used to nice/fast-ish (before someone tells me a 430d or a Civic Type R isn’t fast) so I don’t worship my cars anymore and feel the need to scream it out. I also grew up, before my 430d, I had an EP3 Civic Type R and I didn’t change a single thing on it even though there was a tonne of engine/visual mods for it. Just couldn’t be bothered, the car was perfect as it was.

Even though I wouldn’t do it again, I don’t frown or look down upon people with these badges/grilles because I remember when I got my first BMW/nice car and done those things to it.

I hope they helps you understand to a degree.

Here is my 330i in all her glory

I'm struggling to understand how you have over 11'000 posts on an internet forum. Are there no pubs near you?

Yep it's usually the way to confirm that it isn't an M product to be honest lol

I don’t understand all the hate to be honest.

I like my car to be inconspicuous. The more non-M cars dressed up with all these tacky badges the less the real ones stand out.

Personally I think when the OP used the word deluded he might have been better pointing that finger at himself!

He clearly need to "get out more" as above & realise that MANY beemers these days are festooned in M regalia from the factory (as was my e39 530) as many spec them like that never mind the others that add them latterly.

///M is a trim level now, not a guarantee of being breathed on by a special branch of BMW.

I will admit, I had these on my old 320d in the obligitory M-Sport Trim back in the day.

They weren't tape, but aftermarket black kidney grilles with the coloured slats. At the time I thought it looked great and I never saw any other cars with them fitted (for good reason!)

But now..... I wince everytime I see a car fitted with them - which is quite often :-(

I thought a court decided three stripes were not significantly distinguished as a logo.
