Inedible casings on hot dogs

Just bought some eastern European hot dogs and as title the casings are made of some kind of plastic, why would you do that

i don't understand it's purpose either. you can't really peel it off cold without ruining the shape of the sausage. when you cook them with the plastic on the plastic rips open and shrinks round.. but then it still sticks to one area.

doesn't make sense when the packet of sausages are already wrapped air tight.

Oddly I've had a similar experience recently.

Grilled some VW Bratwurst (that has the casing with little VW logos on it) that split open, charred slightly, and fell off.

I was sure I'd naffed something up by grilling them. I've now no idea if the casing is edible or not.

You don't cook Bratwurst (and other european sausages) like that though. You cook them in water until they are cooked through and only grill them afterwards to colour them
