What strange fears do you have/have you had/know someone has?

I have a strange phobia of flies (all kinds) but not of other flying insects, and my son had a fear of the LDV Convoy which I always found amusing.

Nothing really.

Not keen on plenty things, but a fear ? No.

First world problem bks.

Oh, I have a phobia and can't use any toilet except my own, therefore I wear nappies when going out.

Syringes, not needles, specifically syringes.

As a kid (6-8 sort of age) I would literally freak out at the dentist, meaning that any work I needed done had to be with gas. I can't even look at a syringe on TV.

I am a bit worried that its affecting my health longer term, as I actively avoid going to the doctors for anything that would require taking blood and even missed inoculations at school many years ago as I was totally unable to handle the thought of an injection.

I did let a nurse take blood about 3 years ago, but it took lots of psyching myself up, leaving the room and coming back, for probably half an hour before I could go through with it.

I don't think I'm a pussy, I think that on average I have quite a high pain threshold, so its not that it hurts (or doesn't hurt), its entirety psychological.

LDV Convoy understandable, they look like road going dolphins and a clown is going to come out of them (they usually do haha).

Talking about dolphins, I know someone who can't even look at a dolphin or whales - yet is fine with sharks, oddly - they are scared of the skin and the fact they are mammals. You'd think it wouldn't be such a problem, as they don't live off the coast of California, but it's seeing it in a magazine or online brings fear. I started showing them ones on purpoise..

The energy death of the universe. Thinking about it genuinely scares me and sends me into quite a dark depression. Not long term, it passes quickly. I think it just reinforces the inevitability of death, not only for us personally, but of everything. I also fear death, which I guess is less irrational.

I need to stop listening to astrophysics lectures at bedtime.

Don't worry about it. The earth and the solar system will be long gone by the time that happens.

Thanks, I am fully aware that this isn't going to happen next week, hence the 'irrational' part of the fear.

The point is that even if we make the huge leaps required to become an interstellar, or even intergalactic species, it is still all for naught.

I think you might be confusing "phobia" with "fetish" HTH

As a kid, I used to be scared of a place. A perfectly ordinary patch of grass by s path on a normal street. It really put the white up me. We moved away and years later as an adult I revisited the spot. Absolutely no fear.

Dying. Maybe not irrational, but it makes me feel that panic inside when I think about it. On the other hand. it makes me not scared of most things. Usually if it can't kill me I'm all good.

I also agree with the LDV convoy. Many a stty school travelled to in one of those.

What's wrong with the LDV Convoy? Other than it being, quite possibly, the worst van ever built?

Mine would be Trypophobia. Really freaks me out.

When I have blood taken and it's pretty regularly they use a Butterfly needle with a Tube. The collection is done into a Test tube type device that is screwed on to a valve on the tube. Not a syringe in sight.

Bees, but only when I'm dreaming. If I dream about bees I wake up screaming. Utter terror. But when I'm awake, bees hold no fear for me at all. In fact, I'm considering getting a hive in the garden. I like bees. confused

Butterflies (moths too).

As a kid I used to run away from them if they flew near me, I put it down to visiting a butterfly house when I was very young and as soon as we walked in one of those giant African butterfly things swooped down into my face, scaring the crap out of me and sending me running back out the building.

The desire to run from them went as I got into my late teens, but even now mid-thirties if one flies at me I'll get the urge to duck out of the way, but can resist enough to just bat it away from me now. I suppose this is a good example of a bad experience as a child scarring you for life.

I'm not fond of this one either, just looking at images of it causes my face to tingle a bit, not something I'm afraid of though, just makes me feel 'odd'.

Caves or deep holes. Not unusual I think.
I once had a girlfriend who was terrified of feathers. Otherwise totally rational. O

Heights and a fear of being trapped in a fridge/freezer and suffocating.

Other confined spaces don't bother me at all but as a precaution I am not being buried when I die.
