Massive fly like creature in Crete

Was in Crete the other week and every morning we would get a big black horrible looking bug on one of the white pillars or white hammock of our villa. it was about 5-7cm in length i'd say, think with big wings. it looked from a distance like a massive house fly.
i had to wave a mop at it each morning to make it bumble off before anyone would use the pool.
i thought it was a Cicada of some sort (the noise of them and grasshoppers was every) but im not sure as it just looked like a massive house fly.
no pics too scared! we only saw the odd one resting up each morning until one flew near the OH one early evening and she shat herself!
any ideas what it was?
