A car bought, insured and tax for 2.2k......can it be done?
Discussion
What do you think? That's all the savings I have
Open to just about anything that will not break down. Only need it for 10/11 months, probs just gonna send to salvage after that. So service history isn't that important
Also I'm 24 and have had licence for 6 years, so insurance isn't likely to be insanely high.

Just today I bought a 55 Honda Civic Type S on eBay for £720 with full Honda service History. Insurance is £220 for the year and road tax is £260 for the year.
I make that 1.2K all in although I admit I have not collected the car yet!
Although out of 14 MOTs
10 no advisories
3 Failures on Wipers X 2, a headlamp bulb and low front brake pads
1 pass advisory for indicator bulb discoloured.
So not too worried.

Saab 9-5 HOT, petrol, manual, estate, not in silver or black. Stage 1 with big front pipe. £1500 including 2 sets of wheels and a load of other parts. Net cost after disposals about 1.1k. insurance was about £250, tax about £315. So it was just under your limit before flogging the bits.
Before that a 9-3, similar story. Both a bit leggy, but hey that's shedding.

You should easily be able to do it.
In feb I bought a Smart Roadster (£1400), insurance was (£120) and tax is (£120). It gets high mpg.
Only caveat is I did quite a few minor repairs myself. New roof mechanism, new stereo/ speakers, fix for power steering, fix for horn, etc Still under your budget and came with 12 months MOT too.

It shouldn't be a problem - I sold a BMW E46 325ti Sport for £1,450 in March 2018.
Tax would be £325 a year now and insurance was about £300 a year, so within your budget!
It replaced a 1996 Mazda 323F 1.5i that cost £695 plus £145 a year for tax and was not dear to insure, so about half your budget - but it was so boring it had to go!

£120 insurance? Is that really possible on any main car and standard (non-traders) policy? In feb I bought a Smart Roadster (£1400), insurance was (£120) and tax is (£120). It gets high mpg.
.
Especially on a Smart Roadster on which I imagine the parts could be relatively expensive?
You'll get a perfectly decent little Aygo for £1500 and tax is just £20. Plenty left for insurance.
It won't go wrong and after a year you'll get most of your money back.
The total running cost other than insurance will be pretty much be 10p per mile plus £100.00 in depreciation and £50.00 for new MOT to make it easy to sell.

Back on topic, as somebody else said I'd go for an Aygo or Yaris, loads available for around a grand and unless you live in a war zone I can't see insurance is going to be the same again. You'd be really unlucky if it went badly wrong in 12 months and they're v. light on consumables too.
Civic for a grand

£200 tax
leaves loads for insurance/any issues etc..

Pretty much what I have at the moment. Only I have a slightly better spec, but in poorer condition for a bit cheaper. It's also highly unlikely to go wrong.https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Are you liking it?I have a 19 plate jazz that I'm hating. Too slow, CVT is terribly delayed, suspension not good for motorway driving... Thinking about going back to a cheap, better car. Would a Civic like this be a good option to me?
