Understanding Transmission

Good evening,
Bit a weird question.... If I'm coasting downhill with the engine turned off, what is moving inside the gearbox/clutch housing with the clutch engaged and disengaged? I'm getting a squeaky sound and I'm trying to get to the bottom of it so I want to rule out certain things
Thanks.

I've been hearing the squeaky noise for ages so thought I'd shut the engine off and coast to see if its the engine but it's still doing it. Everything still works OK apart from power steering but that doesn't matter cause when the car is moving the steering become lighter anyway. The noise is doing my nut in. Thought maybe the clutch or flywheel but not sure what moves when the engine is off when coasting with either the clutch engaged or not. Surely just the output shaft will be spinning with the clutch disengaged but the output/input shaft, clutch and flywheel when its engaged, not too sure.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Assuming a manual single clutch gearbox in neutral with the clutch engaged and the engine stopped, the input shaft (and clutch, clutch release bearing etc) will all be stopped and the output shaft, diff, drive shafts etc will be turning with the road wheels.
If the squeak only happens when the vehicle is moving, maybe it's coming from the final drive/brakes?

It does it when the car is at a standstill as well with the engine running (Sorry forgot to mention that), that's why I thought clutch/flywheel or maybe an engine mount?? This turd of a car is costing me an arm and a leg now. changed all parts of the suspension (strut/spring/top mounts), the control arms, wheel bearings, drop links, brakes and it's still doing it, (They needed changing anyway, didn't just replace them cause of the squeak). Was hoping it might have been cause of one of those parts but nooooooo, the car requires more money from me. I'm gonna have to start pimping out my little pecker to pay for this soon.
So you're saying it squeaks when stationary with the engine running and when moving with the engine off, regardless of whether it's in gear or the clutch is engaged? That rules out just about all moving components.
Perhaps it's caused by vibration. If it happens with the car stationary, can't you track it down by ear?

Looks to be more like vibration from somewhere. Tried listening under the bonnet with the engine running but its a diesel so there's a tank noise that's more over powering so it's hard to pinpoint. I hear it better from inside the car but there is only so many places I can fit my meat head to get a more accurate location. Probably just interior trim rubbing against something causing it to make an annoying squeak.

Switch the engine off and try tapping/shaking everything you can find to see if you can reproduce the characteristic noise you're looking for.
Tried this and no luck :-(

Is it related to engine rpm/idle/fast idle/pedal blipped?
Can you identify the rough area of the noise?
Does it happen or change with the clutch pedal pressed/biting/released etc?
What car is it ?
Its not related to anything that I can see, I'd say its coming from the front passenger side. I've tried all tests to see if its clutch etc but wasn't sure what parts in the transmission still moved when the car is rolling with the engine off which GreenV8S cleared up. I have a 2011 Corsa D 1.7 CDTi.Can you identify the rough area of the noise?

If it is not related to anything, then it is just a rattle. Thanks
By anything, I mean, moving, turning, clutch operation, brakes, engine revs, electrical power useage, suspension etc.
If there is no 1 thing that connects to the noise then it is just a rattle, something loose.

Heard lots of Opel/Vauxhall 6-speed gearboxes give terrible trouble. Know the ones in the Alfa 159 do.
Tell me about it, The M32 gearbox is the biggest pile of turd out there. I've had the bearings repaired, 3rd, 4th gear and syncros replaced and I'm booking it in again soon to have the bearings replaced AGAIN with the retro fit end casing (maybe). All this within 4 years and that's with replacing the oil twice a year with the decent stuff, they're so weak!!! I am putting about 370nm of torque through it so that could be why the engine is eating gearboxes like I plough through Cornflakes even though specialists say its nothing to do with power, my car says otherwise.slybunda said:
Could be something simple like a belt.
I had the V-belt replaced a few months ago and the Cambelt a few years ago, plus they're on the drivers side of the engine and the noise isn't your typical squeaky belt noise.I think I'm just going to put it down as trim squeaking against something, there is no change in performance etc and it's been like it for a while now and the squeak hasn't changed in any way so can't be anything bad.
Thanks.
