I'll try to keep this short!

We are about to throw in my PCP E220 because:

1) It isn't worth the balloon (marginally)
2) we picked it up at a time when we needed one "good family car" but now the wife has a motability car for my son, so the need is no longer there.

Essentially the "new" car will be razzed to the train station and back (30 mile return trip) and then all of the family trips and travel will be done in the motability car.

The only stipulation is that it fits my sons wheelchair in the boot, so we are talking golf size as a minimum.

We looked at a couple of cars over the weekend and came to the shuddering realisation that used car folk are generally out to shaft you (I've had company cars before we got the PCP). "Service History" could be limited to one stamp in 9 years, and the aircon regas "is something you could pay for if I do the cambelt" as examples.

Basically I'm thinking about "investing" in a £1k car on the understanding it will last two years before it blows up rather than get shafted for £7k and it last three. Is that the PH endorsed route?

These sounds like stupid common sense questions but I assume mileage isn't really a barrier if servicing has been kept up. Are French cars still terrible?

I've got about two weeks to sort this so it's getting to squeaky bum time....

A 1k car is perfectly sensible for a station snotter but don't be surprised if it needs a bit more maintenance than you are used to and be prepared to effectively throw it away if something major crops up.
French cars aren't terrible by any stretch of the imagination (although a lot of people will still tell you they are) but if it was me I guess i would advise some Japanese a d boring like the avensis mentioned earlier.
