Hello all,

Recently my A3 threw up a warning light. I checked the codes to find a problem with the Haldex controller. Removed, examined, clearly a bit of water ingress. Sent it off for refurbishment which cost £115, refitted it, cleared the fault, job done.

Out of curiosity, I rang an Audi dealer to ask how much it would be to supply and fit a new Haldex controller.

Would anyone care to guess how much?

General dealer formula, including fitting, tends to be about 10 times.

About £1500. But you're comparing a repair to a brand new sealed unit. Not apples to apples is it? smile

You're right, it's not apples to apples, but would you have your old unit refurbed for £115 or would you buy a new one for...

£4807! rofl

£600 of that is labour, apparently. Four hour job, said the chap.

I find it hard to believe that with no mechanical training and working on my driveway I can refit a Haldex controller (two bolts, two electrical connectors) in far less time than a fully qualified Audi mechanic in a professional workshop.

Incidentally, TPS charges £1600 for a new one, so why Audi wants £4207 for the unit itself is beyond me.

Wow !

There was a chap on and educated by youtube who changed the temperature sensor and thermostat on his E92 M3.
He did it in about two hours of his untrained labour and around £100 in parts.

BMW quoted him over £1,000

Landrover wanted £4200 to fix my suspension. It was an active anti roll bar fault. Corroded pipe 3 yrs in. They should have warrantied it but did not. £150 pirtek visit on my driveway fixed it. They got a healthy tip.

My Boss has an A3 Etron which shares the same MMI pop up screen on the dash as all others A3 models including my own S3.

It wouldn't retract & controls many things, so on the basis its on a lease it was sent back to Audi, as theres every possibility mine would become faulty in the next few years i asked him what they charged - can you believe £3.5k !!!!

I'm assuming as my S3 is made of chocolate ie in 3 years new aircon pump, new aircon condensor plus other stuff <40k I don't relish replacing this item in the future. It seems to pay as a business strategy to fit poor quality parts then fleece their customers crazy parts prices when they all fail. Then we go out & buy them again........
