Hi guys. As the title says I am Looking to get my front discs skimmed. As they are 400mm I am struggling to find someone that can accommodate such a task. Highest I’ve seen was 393mm in West Lothian. Or a place down in Leeds can do it but I live in the Falkirk area. Anyone know of a garage that’s within 1 hours drive or so?

Are you looking to have them done on the car? If not most machine shops should be able to skim them.

Why do you feel they need skimming?

I’d rather do it on the car to eliminate any hub issues. There’s definitely a warp in the discs

What hub issues will you have if you take the discs off to get them skimmed.

I imagine it would be far easier, as any machinist can skim a disc.

Have a look here for your nearest Pro-Cut centre: https://skimmydiscs.co.uk/your-nearest-service-cen...

Pro-Cut technology is good but bear in mind there's precious little difference in thickness of disc between when brand new and the manufacturer's recommended minimum thickness. The box-fresh thickness on my M5's front discs is 32mm....and the recommended minimum thickness is 30.4mm at which point you'll probably be experiencing disc runout and the inevitable judder. That's just 1.6mm of metal difference. If your discs are already a bit worn then there'll be even less metal on them.

I thought about having my discs skimmed a couple of year's ago and got a price of £100+VAT for the work from one Pro-Cut place near(ish) to me. I was advised to change the pads at the same time. Consulted my local and very experienced garage owner/mechanic (with Scottish motorsport background) who advised against it. He said skimming the discs would work in the short term but issues inevitably and quite quickly return, at which point you'll be shelling out for new discs and of course pads. Good money after bad? Only you can decide.

Disc skimming didn't seem to add up to me even though new discs (and pads) for my car are shockingly expensive. The price of your M5's brakes are probably of a different order of magnitude.
