So I have found my used car in a main dealer, I want to drive away on my private plate and I see the process as

Take out insurance now on the car with my private plate
Send docs to dealer

Thing is it seems odd taking out insurance on a car I dont have and with a plate thats technically on retention.

Am I missing anything?

Yup - insurance company will not go for that. Not sure what he process is now (used to be able to take to local dvla office but they don’t either any more) - but you probably have to send docs to dealer first I think

Just send the retention doc to the dealer. Don’t think you need insurance.

It can all be done in real-time now online.
Just move the plate, pay your £80 print off the authorisation for the reg plates to be printed, call insurance and activate.

Doesn't the retention certificate and the V5 need to be in the same name for this to be done online?

They needed the V5 (or a pic of it) and sadly it hasn't arrived so I will put the plate on when it does - not the end of the world.
