Advice On 996 for a new kid.

Just selling my 3200GT at the moment and I'm pretty sure my next car will be either a 996 C2 or C4.
I've done a bit of homework on them (servicing costs, porsche warranty) but don't know much about what makes a good one. I'm hoping to get a '99 model with Satnav but not sure whether manual or tiptronic is the way forward. I quite fancy the manual but am concerned that a) the clutches may be weak and b) that the tiptronics hold their value more. Both these concerns are obviously unfounded but I wouldn't mind your opinions on them.
Also I've heard about this RMS worry. Is it that bad? Should I just get Porsche to replace it and then warranty it straight away or is the RMS thing just a bit of a scare thats been blown out of proportion?
Oh, and before you start, I know the 996 isn't classed as a 'true' 911 but I want one anyway! ;)

Also The clutch's on a 996 I dont think are weak it is just how you using them, if you trck the car then they will wear out quicker when I bought my 996 C4 it had done 44K miles and hadn't had a new clutch, but just so happens that 2 months after I had purchased it the clutch went!!.

Compared to a 3200GT I think you'll find the service costs much reduced!
Try both a manual and a Tiptronic, over a long mixed drive if you can.
Unless you do a awful lot of town driving, go for the maunal. Though I'd agree with you, they do tend to go through clutches pretty quickly.
Don't expect a 996 to feel a quick as the 3200GT in a straight line. You'll of course have much more fun on the twisty bits.

never heard of 'weak clutches' on a 996. my first 911 was a '99 job and was a manual c4 (see previously owned pic on my profile). very nice sorted car, never let me down except for petrol pump failure which was a warranty job. rms problem per se is blown out of proportion, due to its frequency, not its resultant isssues. i believe i am correct in saying that as long as you look after the car properly, service regularly, keep it topped up with oil appropriately then if there is an rms problem it will get sorted when you next get it serviced - as it is a warranty claim there's no problem for you. all i would say is do keep extending your warranty every year. as an example of rms failure, i had it happen twice on my c4s in a year of ownership. i never saw any oil spots on my garage floor, so the amount it must have leaked must have been pretty small....
if you can get a facelift version though - 2001 onwards i think it was. that way you get such luxuries as a glovebox...

Can I line up also to give the slapping to anyone who still perpetuates this bullsh1t...come drive my 996 and see how much of a porsche it feels
