A quick hypothetical question regarding insurance quotes.

1. Quote on a comparison website for reg : 1234 XXX e.g BMW520D
2. Buy a different car but exact same colour model with reg : 1234 YYY - BMW520D
3. Before ringing the insurance company you put on your private plate : 123 A
4. Explain that you switched the plate over as soon as you purchased the car.
5. They accept it and start insurance cover. .

What would happen ?

What do you mean?

I've had this issue :

Car had just had private plate removed so wasn't showing on Databases under it's normal plate.
I told insurance what car it was and then told them the registration number my car was on
They started the policy without any problem.

You may have to pay the admin fees for changing the plate..

Maybe i am not understanding the OPs riddle but it seems to me that its not changing the plate on a car with an existing policy, but starting a new policy on a car you just bought with your own plate on it? In which case if they started the policy and they know the reg I am not sure what the question even is....

Didn't think you could put a private plate on a car until you have the v5
Or am I wrong?

When someone asks a hypothetical question regarding insurance, it is rarely hypothetical.

I think the OP is saying he got a quote on one car, and now wants to buy another, but will tell the insurer it's the car they originally quoted on which now has a personalised plate.

So he is knowingly substituting another vehicle for the one the insurance company quoted on, and asking us if that's OK (hypothetically).

Sounds a bit like (hypothetical) fraud to me, but IANAL.

That makes as much sense as the OP.

Not sure why he would do that.

Sometimes the same models can vary in price based on plate? even if the spec , engine , year and value etc is the same.

Maybe he is worried about that changing.

Anyway it's an awful question as by trying to be sly he has completely failed to provide any context! biggrin
