Hello, this is my first post so hopefully I've arrived at the correct section to post this.

Last week I part exchanged my mint condition F30 320i in for a 228i in Estoril blue, I bought this from a Sytner main dealer & the car looked immaculate in the pictures so I purchased the car without seeing it at first. When I went to collect the car I was so excited that I failed to look for anything negative. On arriving home the first thing my neighbour said was "nice car, shame about that scratch" I looked on the rear passenger side wing & there clear as day was a 12"-18" scratch. I really hadn't noticed it at all under the bright sunlight when collecting the car. The next day I took the car to Halfords to have my dash cam hardwired, under their lighting I then noticed the roof had multiple fine scratches all over it.

Obviously i'm a little annoyed as I let my 3 series go stupidly cheap, & paid a fair lump extra for the 2 series....that's life I know. However BMW don't really appear to want to help with the matter other than offering a mop & polish. I'm taking it back for this later in the week. So my question is, going on these poor pictures do you think this will mop / polish out, does it need paint work. Also I have no idea where I stand with BMW on this matter if the mop / polish makes no difference. I have no idea about mopping or detail work so i'd like to pick the brains of people that know about this subject. Thank you in advance, if any more info is required please let me know.

Without seeing it in person I'd say those should disappear with a machine polish or possibly sand and polish.

General rule of thumb is if you can feel a scratch with your finger nail it can't be fully removed by polishing/sanding.

Best of luck.

Cheers,

Chris

PLEASE DO NOT LET BMW "MOP AND POLISH" THE CAR.

They will just make it worse or remove far too much paint or burn through on the line of the wheel arch.

Insist on a qualified/experienced detailer in your area resolving it.

The cost for a detail and normal coating/wax/sealant on a 2 series would be around £400.

I'd machine polish those scratches and do the rest of the car for good measure, plenty of YouTube videos to show the best way to do it:

£50.00 Guild Dual Action Car Polisher ( https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8647300 )
£7.99 AGGER 6inch 150mm Hex-Logic Polishing Pads ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/AGGER-6inch-Hex-Logic-Pol... )
£9.66 Meguiars Ultimate Compound 450ml ( https://www.halfords.com/motoring/car-cleaning/sha... )

Total £67.65

For occasional use that DA polisher and pads are fine and very safe to use compared to a rotary. Once done apply a wax/sealant of your choosing.

I'm glad you told me that, I called BMW this morning & it was the salesman himself planning on doing the Mop work. Which I refused, still waiting on them to get back to me.

Thank you.

Jesus. That is something.

I would be pushing BMW to at least contribute 50% to the cost of a full detail . 200 quid or so is not a lot for them to give up if it means keeping the customer happy.
