HI, after a bit of advice / owner feedback...

I am viewing a 2009 635d tomorrow and it has done low mileage for the age (42k) all backed up with the history etc but my query is it appears to have done just a few thousand miles each year during 2016 - 2017. In 2018 it did over 6k and a further 6k until its recent mot (no advisories)

I know the issue diesels can face with short journeys and not getting up to temp, but would the ow mileage be much of a worry?

I drove another example example last week with just 49k and it drove perfectly with no hesitation or loss of power.... woul dit be best to obviously just test this other car in the same way?

Is there anything particular to look for which would indicate any issues. I understand that the engines are reliable with just vacuum hoses causing an issue when they clog up.

It will be my first big diesel BMW so any help most appreciated!

That engine is also prone to thermostats going, and the red boost hose.

Google ‘hidden menu’ to bring up a temperature display- use this while test driving, it should get to >90, (it’ll take around 8miles), if not, and circa 75, then a thermostat (or both) needs doing - a 2h job, give or take.

`With the bonnet open, look down the osf of the engine block - the red hose is there at the bottom. They can split, will appear oily if so. Again, another simple enough job.

If you’ve a code reader, check glow plug functionality too - you’ll never see the glow plug light on the dash as it pre-warms when you unlock. Glow Plug + Thermostat issues = no regen.

It shouldn’t feel like an 80’s turbo when on the move, the whole point of the twin setup was to make it feel like a bigger engine, if it’s nothing, nothing, 2k rpm, bang, then the small turbo/lines are on the way out. Conversely, tailing off of power after 2.2k = big turbo/pipes on the way out.

HTH.
