Metal heater pipes

Hello all,

Where do the metal pipes at the back of the engine ( V8 ) join the engine itself ?

If that makes sense ..... ;)

The top of the engine in that area is normally wet and I am loosing water. I've checked all of the usual suspects but one of the metal pipes ( left hand one, posible the heater feed ? )does move left to right slightly so I was wondering how / where they're attached to the engine and how difficult it is to get to them to check ?

The ones that disappear under the inlet manifold?
One is threaded into a boss under the manifold itself, the other comes out at the front and has a short rubber hose into the back of the water pump/ thermostat housing.
Mine leaks too, need a fibrescope or something to see where it's coming from!

I'm guessing it's going to be the one threaded into the boss that's loose, coz that'll mean taking the inlet off I presume ?

Well I dunno. I thought that, but the thread has a hard sealant on it and I doubt it'd come loose. It could just be a weep from the back of the 'stat housing that's running along the valley gasket.
Pulling the inlet off is easy enough but you'll need a new gasket to put it back on with (unless you're very lucky, it'll never reseal properly).
If you're going to do it, you may as well renew the two short hoses behind the pump/ stat, 'cos they're a bu99er to change with the inlet in the way...

Well, either that or it has a nut on it... I have a a couple of spare inlet manifolds now, can take a look later.

I've been topping up the water for a while now

Bottom of the inlet manifold:



The other water pipe is retained by the two mounting bolts you can see and extends to the right-hand end (front) of the manifold to meet the hose.



The pipe appears to be soldered/ brazed to the nut, so it must unscrew from the alloy housing. I have three here, there are no signs that any of them have ever leaked.

Looks like it'll not be that one then, more likely to be the other that attaches to the rubber pipe on the back of the 'stat.

Guess the only sure way to find out is to whip the inlet off ....... bu99er !
