We get a fair few spam email from made up people (who all claim to represent top business, but who all seem to have gmail.com email addresses) who tell us our "Alexa ranking isn't as high as it could be".

Is 'Alexa ranking' a thing? Is it what children call 'Google ranking', is it actually something of which I am unaware or is it just trying to press some hot buttons by using fashionable words?

Don't get me wrong; all these emails are deleted on sight, but I'm curious as to their wording.

You are right to delete them. It’s meaningless.

Two decades ago Alexa ranking was a popular metric for big sites, where it ranked them in terms of visitor numbers. No one has mentioned it for years apart from the odd publisher looking to sell ad space on their site, using a decent Alexa rank to show off.

What's different about Alexa ranking to, say, Google page rankimg?

I thought google ran the Alexa service?

We use it, but as a crude metric and one of many to determine the legitimacy of a site/domain.

Looks like Amazon did buy https://www.alexa.com/ - I wonder if that was just so they could use the name for their devices.

Alexa rank used to be worth considering for SEO, but I haven't heard anyone mention it seriously for a few years now.

You still seem to be able to get a free assessment (e.g. https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/google.com) but you have to sign up for detailed information, and they didn't have much information available for a few small businesses websites I tried.

Keep deleting those emails smile
