C4 Knackered ???

I’ve acquired a new noise in my 1990 964 C4.

It’s best described as a medium tone whine. Which is constant from starting the car (cold or hot) and is not dependant on speed or revs.

Appears to be coming from the rear underside. There’s nothing audible from the engine bay, but it’s very noticeable from inside the car.

I’m assuming something is shot in the rear end of the 4wd system.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Sounds like something to be checked out sooner rather than later before it gets worse and compounds other problems. May turn out to be something simple (let's hope...)

If it is constant, and not dependent on revs/speed then I would say it is unlikely to be drivetrain.

Is next door missing a cat (or badger )

Have you considered a knackered speaker or similar?
