I usually have dash cams in my cars. Unfortunately, I discovered yesterday that the 650 USB port send to be a permanent live which means it's not much use - not even sure I want to leave my iPod connected to that, but assume a USB stick should be OK.

So, has anybody fitted a dash cam? I have wired into the fuse box in other cars, and would for the McLaren - but there is a distinct lack of earths in a carbon tub car!
I found a (12C) post which suggested that there are earths behind the door pillar trim (where the emergency door release strap is) and that this trim unclipped fairly easily. However, although that seemed to be true of the bottom, the upper part seemed firmly fixed and I'm reluctant to break the trim on a car I've owned 2 days!

Has anybody fitted a dash cam and have any tips? It should I just be brave with the trim......

Another option is using the OBD port, I use mine in the Tesla for a permanent live but I think they usually have an ignition live as well. You can just get a piggyback adapter that plugs into it.

Thanks - not actually figured out where the OBD port is yet!

In fact I was wrong - the USB does seem to stay live when you lock the car, but it's not permanently live. It seems to shut down about 5 or 10 mins later. So dashcam is now plugged into a small 4 port USB hub stored in the net in the passenger footwell.

The 720S is the same. Shuts down after a few minutes.

I don't know if the 650 has two fuse boxes like the 570, I ran a positive lead to the fusebox behind the pax seat and piggy backed onto one of the fuses that power up and down with the ignition.

I had originally wired it to the fusebox under the glovebox but, like you, didn't want to have it powered all of the time, theres a good negative connecion under the glovebox so just left that lead connected there.

Yes, it does have two fuse boxes.

Useful tip about the earth - thanks. (Although I don't have a glove box, so it might not be the same I guess)
