What can I tow?

So looking at the law I passed my test after 1997 so newer laws apply.

I have a Relay van with 3.5 tonne MAM.

I think I can only tow up to 750kg without taking further exam. Any experts?

Licences issued from 1 January 1997

If you passed your car driving test on or after 1 January 1997 you can:

1. drive a car or van up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass (MAM) towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM

2. tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined MAM of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg

Kerb weight of a Relay varies on model so you’d need to check weight of the van before pursuing the second option

Option 2 is never going to work for the OP. In order to tow a trailer over 750kg on a B licence the sum of GVW of the towing vehicle plus the MAM of the trailer must be less than 3500kg. The GVW for his van is already 3500kg so it's impossible for him to tow a trailer over 750kg.

Exactly, as I read it option 1 states I can drive my 3.5 tonne van with a allowed trailer up to 750kg

If the van wasn't 3.5t MAM I could drive say a 2.5t MAM car with a 1tonne trailer.

Are you thinking of using the van and trailer in connection with your employment or for personal use? If it's the former, then even with a 750kg trailer, you need to be aware that depending on the the exact nature of what you carry and the distances over which you operate you may need a tachograph fitted.

That is for that, I had read that. Basically it is a camper I have converted myself and now want to tow some things behind. All personal.
