Getting my elise in a matter of weeks now and want to upgrade the alloys to 17 inch evil looking split rims, some of you chaps are most probs screaming at your puters saying how its going to ruin the looks or cornering ability but with low profile rubbers the rolling radius is gonna be pretty similar.

Anyone got any info or photos of anyone that has done this??

Also is a 30bhp shot of NOS safe on a standard elise with just the decat pipe, sports exhaust and filter??

Lemme know boys and girls.......

Don't put NOS on a 1.8 Rover K series unless you're happy with doing engine rebuilds. The engine simply isn't strong enough. Sure you'll get from one side of Curry's car park to the other quicker than any of the Novas but they'll be having the last laugh.

And I won't even comment on the wheels.

OH MY GOD!

I just looked at your website. You're actually serious, aren't you!

BTW: Typo on your homepage. You said "it looks the tits". Close but no cigar.

Yes.... what you are about to do to this poor Elise should be considered GBH or at least bordering on abuse.

If you want to be laddy and 'phat' do us all a favour and don't get this type of car, if you ever came to a Lotus meeting you'd be laughed out the car park!!

lol

I am inded VERY serious.....haha.....just sold that motorbike last week, need the elise to stand out from the other ones I seen.

So I reckon the Dark blue one sitting nice and Moody looking on 17 inch rims should look the tits

The NOS is for the extra burst of power needed to compete with the big boys from 3rd gear onwards.

I apreciate you comments though mate, if your right about the engine not being strong enough then I may have to re-think it.

So adeewuff does that go for ANY 17inch wheels??

Do they do a similar wheel to the standard one but bigger??

hey whatever you want to do is fine with me, but i think you will have problems here.

I am not sure you can get the right geometery for these type of rims on the car - even with the lower profile tyre you may still be hitting the clamshell over the bumps - some people have fitted exige rims to the s1 but have had to accept that the tyres will hit the clam (exige rims are bigger)

as to the NOS - as was said before - not on a k series unless you spend a great deal of money on uprating the internals - eg forged pistons etc and I think you would need the uprated head gasket and the "ladder" bolts to keep the thing together - at least £3k of work and bits there.

And if you want to spend circa 15k on car that corners brilliantly and then run in on nos in a straight line - that of course is up to you.

(but if I see one with an ultraviolent undertray light driving round - I am getting the monkey wrench out )

OK, joking aside, here is the technical answer to the NOS question from Dave Andrews, an engine tuning expert:

Unless you fancy adding piston replacement to your weekly 'to do' list them I would steer clear of anything that increases combustion pressures on the 'K' series (NOx, S/C or turbocharging), especially something which steps up the BMEP as rapidly as NOx.

The K series pistons have a *very* narrow ring pack and hence entremely thin lands, breakage of these lands is the primary mode of failure and this can happen when BMEPs are high on a normally aspirated engine, on Nitrous they *will* break and you will likely destroy your engine.

You have been warned...

From your postings I can see that you aren't getting this car for the sublime handling, grip and heritage!

Putting great big bloody wheels on it is not going to impress anyone - seriously. In fact you will just increase the rotating mass and slow the bloody car down and look a head in the process.

Incidently the radio reception is crap in the Elise so you can't impress no ho's with your bling blingin' basslines from Tim Westwoods shows... know what i'm sayin'??

I hear what your saying but I need a car thats different, It won't look tacky if you look at my old MR2 and my Bike I think you will agree it not a "Nova" Project...it should look pretty Meaty.

I never knew that the engine was so weak!!! there is no way I'm spending 3K on the engine just to use NOS so I'll just forget that idea.

Would love those spider rims on the S2 though they look pretty good, just need to see them on the S1.

Well I can see you chaps like to keep things standard which if fine, you may just change your mind when I'm done though

Nope. My mind's made up.

There are ways to make your car look 'meaty' without undoing all the hard work Lotus put into making it handle as well as it does.

And for what it's worth, I think the wheels on your MR2 look gash.

No, no, no!! It won't make it look different! It will just go under the catagory of Max Power tat and would look utter !

The fact is most Elises have been tweaked or tuned in various ways - hardly standard. The kind of useless 'visual' upgrades you are talking about do little to impress anyone and if anything will reduce the value of the car. I can see many a potential buyer looking at the split rims and running a mile!

ps It's getting late on a Friday and I want to go home, so please excuse the over use of exclamation marks.

Mr Jay

I am on your side really - nothing wrong with doing some mods - I did some on mine - but mostly performance rather than style ... the personally I like the black techno mags - or the exige style rims (also black) and I certainly would have gone further if I had the budget.

As to the NOS - I have a mate who has fitted several nos kits to cars (and land rovers )
so I did look at this in a jokey kinda way .... but like I say could be done with a 1.4l k series but the 1.8 is too stretched already...

anyway the s1 is easy to modify up to about 150bhp through cam reprofiling and exhaust decat manifold and throttle bodies. so that will help your top end ambition. but you still won't crack the 135 - 140 mph range in a liz.
