BMW or VW Diesel Options - Help plz

Morning all, so looking to get family member (& myself) a diesel car as will be mainly be doing motorway miles (approx 60 miles per day)

Was looking at a MK7 Golf 1.6 TDI (Insurance will be high on a GTD or higher)

Or even a 120 or 118d from 63 onwards

Any info to help plz?

120d any day over the under powered 1.6 Golf ..... but the 120d doesn't come without its issues. Or just go and buy a Focus

You could look at the Golf 2.0TDI GT or Match. Both high spec, but without the insurance loading of a GTD.

If you're looking at a 1-series diesel, you want a 2015 facelift, with the B47 engine which solved the camchain issues of the older engine.

How much are you looking to spend?

I'd always pick the 2.0d over a 1.6d especially considering it'll mainly be doing motorway work, I'd say take a look at the Focus Q30 V40 as they're good cars that are easily on par with the cars you're looking at:

I own a 64 plate Golf 1.6 TDI which I use for occasional motorway commuting.
Adaptive cruise is good for this as is 60+ mpg, even with only five gears, the seats have good support and the cabin is clean and up to date feeling.
I bought it used with a good warranty and its done 20k miles with me so far with no major issues other than consumables.

at the mo its leaning towards the 120d bmw hopefully 15 plate or so

Other cars are being considered and so is leasing but sis is adament on buying 2nd hand but isnt YET fused on type of car

I considered the 1 series when I got my Golf GTD.
Unfortunately the 1 series was just a bit too cramped in the back for my teenage kids and boot was too small.
My GTD has done 76k with me in 2 1/2 years.
Great car . Right size, comfortable, drives well.
Currently looking at replacing the GTD with another Golf!
