As indicated in the title, which is the best battery for the car to see it through the cold winter months. It will be a daily driver mainly short distances. Garaged most of the time when not in use. Major maintenance booked for October by Porsche’s Indy. Halfords nearby (battery) if needed

I have found the Halfords battery fine in my DD. My Indy put an unknown named battery in my Cayman 5 years ago with no issues since.
If you like brands, then Bosch are relatively cheap and have long guarantees.

I fitted a Yuasa battery from Halfords in my 996 C2 3.4. Excellent cranking power and a 5 year warranty. Also fitted a wired in connection for a CTek charger. Never any issues.

Bosch S5 in my 996 after about 8 years use was replaced with a Yuasa. Both have been better than the standard Porsche branded battery.

What size do you have now?

I have a Bosch S4 013 in mine but web searches seem to spec the 096. Seems to cope 10 days idle but any longer and I stick the conditioner on it.

096 is smaller. You should be able to fit the 110. I have this in my 986. Yuasa cheaper from GSF if they still have their 60% discount running. Otherwise Tayna Batteries next best and cheapest place.

Make sure it’s charging fine and that the positive Y cable that runs between alternator and starter etc is also still ok

If the car sounds lazy when starting when fully charged then it’s more than likely the Y cable - made a huge difference on mine and means the battery gets charged better .... like you I was worried over winter when it was doing lots of short journeys from a cold start!

I ran a Bosch S5 096 in my 996 3.4 (1999) for over 10 years and it never let me down. I didn’t have access to a conditioner at the time and as long as the car was started within 3 weeks standing, it would be fine. Just make sure you change it with the ignition on as I got mine stuck in a loop and couldn’t turn the alarm off!
