Dear all,

wanted to ask your opinion as to an issue I am having with virgin media.

I have had longstanding problems with loss of connectivity with virgin media cable broadband and have had their engineers come out numerous times(changing channels, splitting between 2g and 5g, changing the underground cables, changing routers - VM superhub 3) all with little effect.

They report blackspots/low signal in various parts of the house despite the property being relatively small. I have added a wifi extender to little effect.

I have read that using the VM superhub 3 as a modem and having an alternative router is the way to go. Can you suggest a decent router for me to use?

thank you

Are you sure it's a wifi issue? Have you plugged a PC into the SH3 to see if you still get drop outs?

I have just put in a google WiFi mesh system for similar problems ( plus there were still Some poor signal areas in my house despite a WiFi extender - thick walls). I think it is the VM router that is crap. I upgraded to the latest super hub thingy and still rubbish. Early days but problem seems to have been fixed. Not cheap but dead easy to install.

The VM router is awful and I’m amazed they still refuse to believe there are issues with it after so long.

I’ve replaced 4 VM households now with Tenda MW6 mesh WiFi and would certainly recommend d that route after learning about them on here. Google or Bt mesh is another option which gets good reviews.

I am sure they are aware the router is garbage, they are probably just playing for time until they upgrade the present ones.
Like someone else suggested, are you sure it is just the wifi signal that is being lost and not the broadband itself ?

Run this for a week on a computer wired to the router with an ethernet cable and report back with your graph. Don't run it over wifi as the results will be meaningless.

God, Virgin are awful. I had them in the past and the hub was terrible.

Me and the wife had identical Samsung tablets, brand new and only one would connect.

Mind you, that could have been the tablet I suppose!

I have the SH3 and it's fine, good WiFi signal throughout the house and into the garden, been running for a couple of months now without issue.

I've always ran my virgin superhub in modem mode.
I use a linksys ea6300. Been really good. Its runs at least 5 or 6 devices all the time. Sometimes double that with no issues.

many thanks all,

i think that it may be the wifi rather than the cable feed into the property....

whenever, i contact virgin they invariably say that they cant identify a fault.

i can look into the "broadband quality monitor"..

if an alternative router would you think that a "mesh" system is better than a single router?

Have any smart home devices connected? From reading the virgin forums, if you have; some replies seem to indicate putting the hub in modem mode, and getting a decent router will help

Over here I’m in SH3, 24 devices connected, and it will play up on occasion; for this it’s also been suggested to rename the 2.4 and 5ghz channels to provide separation, as apparently that helps also

You still need the SH3 they don't you for a modem? Other than that easy to setup?

Hi C2red: yes, do have some smart devices. I was planning to look at a separate router and using the sh3 in modem mode.

Any suggestions for routers? Mesh or standalone? I have upto 20 devices across 3 floors...

Hi all,

picked up an asus rt-ac86u router and set this up yesterday; everything seems so much more stable and speedy..
am really shocked at how poor the superhub 3 was now.

now it's time to try and work out what all the other functions are.....

thanks all.

Nice router, you may / may not need the Merlin firmware
