Buying and insuring a car without logbook

Sorry if this is a stupid question, just looking for some reassurance.
I want to buy a cheap runaround from a friend of the family (£500). He doesn't have the logbook and the issue is the car has private plates. So he wants to wait until getting a replacement logbook before transferring the V5. In the meantime, I want to buy the car and drive it, and insure it.
Are there any issues with doing this? I'm not worried about handing over the money without having the V5 immediately signed over.

I'm led to believe that transferring the V5 before transferring the plates causes issues (and extra cost) with transferring the plates? Don't know anything about this but I want the car asap!
Money will be changing hands up front so am I right in thinking I'll be the owner but not the registered keeper? If so, can I legally insure and drive the car until the V5 is signed, assuming worst case it takes say 6 weeks to get replacement V5 and transfer plates?

Nope. He goes online and takes the number off. A new number (or previous number) is issued & V5 arrives in the post. Seller can download a form to get new plates made up.Simples

It has simply been lost. Only realised when started looking to sell the car recently.
My main concern is insuring the car whilst I will own the car (because I have paid for it) but I'm not the registered keeper. Can I do this? I've run a dummy insurance quote with direct line and you need to confirm that you are the owner and registered keeper. I don't want to say yes to this when it's not technically the case.
Are there alternatives? Temporary insurance. Surely you can insure yourself on a car that you don't own if you need to use it?

Best bet re insurance is to talk to the insurers.
I think the OP is possibly overthinking the "Are you the registered keeper?" question.
If the V5 was available it would be perfectly acceptable to notify the change of keeper by post or at the post office when taxing the car. You would then think nothing of driving away in your taxed and insured car even though the V5 was still on its way to Swansea to be processed rather than actually already bearing your name.
Just to be on the safe side, tell your situation to your insurance company in the simplest possible terms - something like "I've just bought the car, the V5 has been lost, we've applied for a new one but it might take a couple of weeks and then I'll be the registered keeper" and let them decide whether they are happy. I'm sure they will be. Then get on and use the car if you need to.
If your friend is the current registered keeper then for him to apply for a replacement bearing teh same details is the quickest way. They'll despatch it more or less straight away. If you apply then they'll write to your friend as the current RK to check the application is honest and wait for him to respond so it will take even longer.
Once your friend gets his new V5, he can retain the number online which will generate another V5 with an age related reg number. This is the V5 that you can use to notify that you are the new keeper.

I have tried a quote with moneysupermarket and have been able to input me as owner but 'other' as registered keeper, and I get quotes on that basis, it appears to be ok.
Another issue is that if you insure it with the current registration, and then inform your insurers when the registration is later removed and issued with another one, you may incur an 'admin' charge. Direct line, Churchill and a few others don't, because only the reg no is changing, not the vehicle itself, but some will!
Following on from my query, the private plate has now been put on retention and the old reg is reinstated. Plates have been ordered but won't arrive for a couple of days. Am I ok to continue using the private plate for a couple of days? And presumably I let my insurance Co know the 'new' number now and not when the plates are eventually changed?

Really, what on earth are you looking for? Of course it's not ok to use the private plate. But what is the risk involved. Not much. A bit. Some. FFS make your own decision.Bert
