Hi,
I'm looking for an EGT gauge kit, preferably 52mm circular gauge and a pyrometer with a 90 degree head (neater packaging).

I've seen VDO and expensive "loud" gauges as well as suspiciously cheap 7-segment LED types.

Open to suggestions please!

you can make straight thermocouples 90's....by bending them lol.

Or any angle in between.

Digital gauge, analogue ?

PLX Devices make some nice gauges and multi display gauges, but not always the cheapest.

VEMS do a basic looking unit, that offers wideband and EGT together

Stack one looks quite nice ?

Budget digital one from Finland ?

Or if laptop or ecu logging is an option, ECUMaster do a cheap 8 channel EGT amp, but it doesnt run a basic gauge option.

Hi,
Thanks!
Didn't know you could bend them.
I guess the probe is filled with an insulating powder rather than being potted?

I want a 52mm circular gauge, had a look at the VDO kit:

Cheaper than a rebuild I guess 😉

Reason is I'm fitting a better intercooler and maybe tweaking the fuelling a little.

An EGT gauge is my insurance policy.

The more info you have the better. Although not sure what your expectations of an EGT gauge are ?

As a tuning tool.....I wouldnt say they're well up there with important things. Obviously wideband is the cheapest/easiest/most important.
Knock detection important of course. Temperature monitoring in general

EGT will vary depending on where installed, fuel used, and of course tuning. Although I havent it found to vary really that much,

EGT per cylinder is quite useful for diagnosing issues as well as monitoring, as if a cylinder were to go down etc, this can be seen quite readily via logs etc.
But even my EGT per cylinders read cooler than the EGT at the turbo inlet.

But gauges for all of the information, very limited use, as lets face it, how long can you watch gauges if you're actually making any decent power and driving before that turns into an accident ?

The thermocouples are actually hollow up until near the tip where the temperature measurement occurs and where the two cables would ultimately meet. I've cut open the 6mm probes before after they've expired. Although never bothered cutting the 3mm one open

For pre-turbo...do consider that if the probe breaks off for whatever reason....your turbo will not be happy. Thinner sensors respond faster, 6mm sensors are stronger.

Thanks for the advice!

Related to this thread here...EGT gauge was suggested fit of I was planning to fit a better intercooler and increase the fuelling a little.

Main reason for the change is that I want a bit more torque to hold speed on long gradients. I'm not building a drag race monster or anything flash.

Not really seeing what an EGT gauge is going to help you with there.

If you want more torque etc, the money might be spent on a dyno session with a competent tuner.

You arent going to be able to determine gains via an EGT gauge. Nor at part throttle should you be anywhere near any risk of causing harm via tuning, that a wideband would not be a far better tool than EGT.

If you were holding full throttle for extended periods, then yes it would be very worthwhile. Part throttle does get hot, just not quite as hot as heavy load, unless you were also running it very lean...but again, that's where the wideband is more important.

Plus one on the EGT danger of coming apart if before turbo and say goodbye to turbo. Would never leave on it situ could in theroy install one before and one after and work the offset out but as mentioned far more useful tools but if gauges float your boat then go after the turbo if plan is to have it there all the time.
